I'm probably nuts to take this class over the summer, but I'm on a tight schedule and it has to be done.

Anyone else going to suffer with me come July??? 😡

nope already suffering as it is. i am studying for the mcat and taking some classes over the summer 😱

I will be taking it in the coming weeks.

I am going to take it at a CC so I'm worried that it won't be as detailed as I hope it will be. Who knows, maybe the CC will surprise me, but I'm expecting to study like hell for the physical sciences section on the MCAT so adcoms don't question my decision to take a pre-req at a CC.

Anyways, misery loves company 🙄

I'm taking physics by night, and just started at a 35 hr/week research job. It can be tiring, and I'm a little apprehensive about whether or not I can keep it up once we move beyond kinematics. Right now I really haven't had to do much studying outside of class and recitations.

Sort of. We're on quarter system, so it's physics 3 -> light, waves, etc.

me!

the only saving grace is I'm just taking the lecture, so I save the money for the 1 credit from lab and don't have to cram...9 hours of labs into each week =D

Good luck to you. A class on top of an almost full time job sounds terribly difficult.

Its pretty common for people to take CC classes over the summer when they are home from school, they were doing it when I was an undergrad 10 years ago, and it hasn't hurt anyone I know from getting into med school. People from universities bomb the PS section of the MCAT too, so thats no indicator of doing well on the exam, we all have to study like crazy no matter where we take the class. The adcoms are not going to bring it up I promise 🙂

Well, we can all be miserable together, but at least its only 5 weeks of misery instead of 12.

Yes, I'm going to Physics Camp, both Camp Session I and Camp Session II! Calc-based, to boot!

(Assuming that I pass Physics Camp Session I, since it's a prereq for the latter and all that jazz. If I don't add that disclaimer, the FSM will smite me.)

😱
And I thought I had it bad working full time and taking algebra based physics 2!! Well at least you know you will get a 15 on PS!!!

I think we should all keep this thread going as we are in class in order to encourage each other to keep studying while our friends are at the beach and otherwise enjoying the summer like most people do.

I am taking Physics 2, Biochemistry and Physiology....and doing 15 hrs of research/week, volunteering in ER, and in International Rescue Committee..

Does anyone know what the topic list is for Physics 2? My physics 1 professor fell so far behind and he mentioned that we didn't get a chance to cover fluids, so I'm not sure if that was a part 2 topic or if its something I need to teach myself for MCAT.

I want to start reading the textbook before class begins, but I don't want to waste time reading chapters that should have been covered in part 1.

Good Lord, I hope you're right about that!

I'm motivated by sheer terror and grim determination, 'cos this is my second time through. (I'm a non-trad non-science major.) My two single worst grades were Calc II (F, because I suffered from severe recto-cranial inversion at the time) and Physics I (CD, because I was taking it in the same term as Calc II, and apparently they really mean it about Calc II being a co-req.) Several years down the road, knocked out a Calc II retake this spring to prove I could do it, even though I'm applying M.D.; with it all fresh, I decided to go calc-based instead of algebra-based.

With that said, I have another non-trad premed friend down the hall in algebra-based, and based on what I'm hearing I am actually quite pleased with calc-based. For me, it makes more sense.

At least I think it does. We'll see how the first test for Camp Session I goes!

(I too am working full-time, by the way. So we're both super elite. Or dumb. Pick one.)

I endorse this plan wholeheartedly.

Good luck!!! Its people like you and K that are making me feel like a lazy bum with all you guys are doing this summer!!! 😀

How do you have the time to do this camp while you are working full time? Is it offered at night? That's awesome that you are able to do that, I know you will kick ass, here comes that 15!!!!

Math is my biggest weakness, I admire those who are good at it. I'm sure by taking it over it will impress the adcoms, even if it doesn't replace the grade.

Math is my weakness, it has brought down my BCPM GPA considerablely. I don't know if I should retake

I am taking both Physics 1 and 2 (6 weeks each) and it is definitely challenging. I am a little worried though because they tests are probably a little easier than they should be and we have skipped some things...

The end of the first 6 weeks is next friday, and I am on track for an A. Unfortunately, our professor for 2 is not going to be the same for 1, so I am hoping for the best!

Add on the 12 week Chem 2 I am taking as well and this summer is a lot rougher than I thought it was going to be.

Physics 2 was the only class I ever took over the summer. Trust me, if you keep up with the work, you will not suffer at all. It is very refreshing to only have to worry/do work for ONE class at a time. I actually found taking physics over the summer to be much less stressful and difficult than taking sciences during the regular year.

I am and I am really freaked out. I hated Physics I and 5 credit hours is huge for any GPA.

Also, my prof said she has never taught a summer course before. Yikes...

Anyone on here from the NYC/LI area? I'm all for forming a study group. If not, we can always help each other via this thread.

We have to stay confident, we will get A's this summer!!!!

👍 Good idea

woo! I hope this optimism carries into july! haha

When is everyone's first day of class? I start July 5.

From personal experience I found it was best to take math-related classes over the summer than during the regular semester. You really get to benefit from the fact that you are in class four to five days a week, so the stuff is constantly fresh in your mind for the following day, whereas with a regular semester you might have it every other day or less, and then you have other **** that takes priority and your mind becomes a cluster**** of molecules, bacteria, electrons, etc. and then you have to find room for vectors and x,y,z's

And also, you get it over with it faster. 😀

I'm taking physics 2 and physiology the second summer session. 5 weeks of nothing but science baby!

Yes, and actually, the night sections are the only sections of the calc-based series. It's delightful how helpful they are!

We had our first test on Friday. The professor came in and said, "You guys can have the full hour and a half, but it only took me 20 minutes." Most of us were there working until the bitter end, and I screwed the pooch (though not as badly as I had hoped.) Time to crank up the studying!

Yeah, I don't know if I would have, but while I had a year of college-level math as an undergrad, I didn't have a semester of calc and a semester of stats (quarter system.) So instead of trying to jump back in, find, and take a quarter of Calc II, I started over.

For what it's worth: It really does go better if you actually study, but I had to teach myself how to do that.

I am, at Queens College. QC starts 7/5 but I have another class so I'm starting 7/7. Clinical Pharmacokinetics >>>> "Physics" that I will never use in real life.

I am in the LI area. Nassau. But I also have to review all my Therapeutics before I go back to school/rotations. YIKES!

gahh i feel your pain. i'm taking a calc based physics course and its torture. but summer classes do cover a lot of material in a short amount of time, i should have expected this >_<

I just came out of physics 1, Ive have 3 days of rest time, physics 2 starts in 24 hours. I am also working about 20 hours a week, and I am going to try and start volunteering. Good luck to everyone 🙂

how is everyone holding up??

Finished Physics 1 with an A, and we just had our first test in 2 (electricity and circuits). I think I did well on it, but will find out tomorrow. It looks like it is going to be a good bit harder from here on out. The 12 week Chem 2 on top of this is really making it a challenging summer. I am riding the A/B line right now so I have to work harder.

I hope everyone is doing well.

I took Physics I and II both with lab during summer of 2009 and received an A for both courses. It's possible, but it takes a lot of time. I was also working as a pharm tech during simultaneously, so I didn't have time for much else during the summer.

good luck!

volunteering starts in about a week for me and I'm working as well. woo summer!

volunteering gets boring ;p

I know, I've done it before haha

it can't be worse than my research internship (that I quit) 9 hours a day watching a woman who speaks 10 words of english pipette stuff into tubes and run gels.......

Made it through Physics I. Second session started yesterday. In general, I prefer shocking things to dropping things off of tall buildings, so I'm hoping that this will be more enjoyable. Whee!

just started Electricity today haha

and yeah, I didn't really like anything covered in Physics I at all

Hi everyone, I haven't been here in a while to check up on everyone, I've been spending my mornings in the help lab, afternoon in class and evenings doing problems. Repeat x 4 days, then work the other 3 :scared:

3 more weeks to go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hang in there everyone!

In Physics 2 now, and I remember why I hated Physics 1 when I took it in 2005. At least the material in 2 seems to be more interesting than 1, although all of it sucks when compared to other sciences. Also working 40 hours a week. And this was a good idea because...? Four weeks to go.

It does suck to be in this class and work 40 hrs/week. 3 more weeks to go for me, we can do it!!!!

I got into med school and will no longer be taking physics 2 for the third time as of 9am tomorrow morning when i drop. laters E&M

So calc-physics II this summer crammed into a 7 week course (also volunteering, working and research). Final exam is on the 25th and the past 1.5 months have been a living hell, I can't wait until physics will be out of my life forever -- OH ITS SO CLOSE!

As a side bar for anyone having just started, my prof nailed us with 3 tests so far, all of which the averages were below 40. He has in turn given us enough extra credit for the average to be brought up to where it needs to be. What's awesome though is that my averages were ~60 so I have in turn arrived at 100% on my 3 tests with some extra credit in the bank to be used on my final. Feel so good right now that an A is there for me to loose.

God I hated this class so much, still do as its not yet over. But those still in it, keep kicking and screaming, JUST THINK OF HOW BAD IT WILL BE IF YOU HAVE TO REDO IT IN A FULL TERM! GAGHHHH!!!

I don't know if this has been asked here before but I've taken physics I (and now physics II) over the summer. where does the count for my amcas gpa? Does it average in as a new semester?

Physics II is way more interesting and easier to understand than physics I. I completely enjoyed it and understood it almost perfectly.

And ye shall read the AMCAS instruction manual, and it shall set ye free. Top of page 37, specifically.

Back on topic: At the moment, with one week done and five to go, I currently have a greater than 100% average. So much love. And on the first quiz, I could use my TI-89+ again. Even more love. This is so much better than Physics I.

Anyone else take an exam yesterday? So frustrated, I was doing the homework problems well and then when I sat in front of the test yesterday I started doubting myself.

After the exam I thought of all the mistakes I think I made. 😡

I probably did better than I thought I did, but not as well as I could have.

We will see I guess!
