I just got my PCAT scores (first time taken):

Verbal 407 63
Biology 402 57
Reading 396 43
Quantitative 383 25
Chemistry 400 54
Composite 398 47

Writing 5

I was very dejected at first sight, but upon asking classmates and reading message boards, I realize that when people get ten points higher (raw score)for a particular section, their percentile shoots up like 20 points.

I proceeded to call Harcourt, but they don't have tables of how many right/wrong answers correspond to percentiles. I know that test forms vary, but I just wanted to get a general idea.

My question is in regards to people who have taken the Kaplan or any other PCAT classroom course. Please let me know of the your score before and after on official PCAT tests. I know this class should help me, but I would like reinforcement. How did this class help you? I'm hoping that they will teach me how to guess better too, since some questions may be tricky.

Thanks!

How did you study for this test?... I didn't take the kaplan course, but I used thier 2004/2005 book to study, and i think it helped a lot. I scored in the 90+s... don't know if that helps ya

That is all you did? Did you do any other preparation? What sections in particular helped and what was fluff?

Basically.... except, the book is designed to be a review on material that is familiar to the user. Atimes, there are things i know zip about(like plants and what not), or sometimes I need something stronger than a review.... then, i go back to my text book, and re-learn that material. But overall, i felt the book was very good. I read it front to back two times... Can't really tell you which section I thought was best. They were all good.

Writing was not multiple choice and maybe the graders feel asleep during their grading. This section requires human scoring, so the machine couldn't dock me.

Hey all! Just wanted to let you know that I took the Kaplan course in August in preparation for the October '05 exam. My mistake was not taking the test before the class, as I have no scores to compare. However, from what I have heard from other applicants, the class does help. A friend of mine took the test twice and got around a 30 and 50, respectively. After taking the Kaplan course, she received a 90% composite and an interview to every school she applied to. I got a 68 composite and also an interview to every school I applied to. Just go to every class and do the work you are assigned.

Word on the street is the Kaplan course isnt worth the money. The Kaplan book is a much better cost to benefit. Was your problem finishing all the questions or knowing the answers? You may benefit from just practicing test taking.

I think it may help some students and not others.
If you need everything digested, and need to be taken by the hand through each question type, because you don't have your own method of tackling questions, then Kaplan is for you. But don't expect to learn Science or math, because they go way to quickly. You do get practice, but you can find practice books at much cheaper rate.

I only used the 2004/2005 Kaplan book for the October test, and I scored 98%. I think it was great for a review before the test, although the math and organic chemistry sections were a little weak. I recommend the Kaplan GRE math review book, since it has lots of practice problems for the non-calculus parts. A lot of the problems are exactly the same on the PCAT, except they changed the numbers. Setting up the problem is usually the harder part, so having that down saves a lot more time for the harder problems (calculus).
