anyone using a Kindle on the Wards?

Haha hey don't give him to much crap, I was just thinking about this the other day. I'm sure it would look super nerdy but, I would love to carry this in my bag as oppose to 2-3 small cumbersome books. Idk if these things are touch screen but if they are, that would be great for knocking out question books.

Anyone using medical e-books on the kindle?

What's a kindle?

What's a kindle?
It stores electronic books. Go to Amazon's website and you can read about it.

med008, I don't use one on the wards, but it might not a bad idea if you don't have access to clinical resources like UpToDate. Ask some of the MS3s at your school how helpful it would be, because I'm sure it depends on the hospital. At the Cleveland Clinic, there are tons of computers on all the floors, so a kindle would not be necessary.

Just received my Kindle 2.
I carry only an iphone and Kindle. It's great - no lugging heavy texts and
it lasts 4 weeks on a charge. If a book isn't available formatted for Kindle, or at least available in PDF (which you can email to your Kindle) then I'm not puRchasing it. Period. When I get home I like to talk to my wife and workout, instead of digging into some time-glutton like Bates. You'll see them all over the place in 6 months or so. You'll also see TRX, which I also carry. But that's another conversation.

Can you make notes in the margins?

Yes. You can use the keyboard to create notes while reading.
Kindle transfers your notes to it's "My Clippings" files which can
be searched or transferred to a separate file. This is a nice feature
in light of the fact that some of my STEP 1 notes are now in an
outdated book on a shelf...

I am bumping this thread in hopes that someone will be able to recommend books for Kindle to use on the wards. Thank you.

I use a kindle fire.

Books: Pocket Medicine, Pocket Pediatrics, Harriet Lane, abridged Harrison's and Williams obstetrics, Pocket ECG brain. Have thought about getting Current Diagnosis and Treatment.

Apps: Medscape, Lexicomp

I use kindle touch. It fits perfectly into your white coat pocket and weighs half as much as a pretest or case files book, which are the only books I have on the kindle so far (as well as a few leisure reading books). I converted the pdfs to kindle format so the tables are a little messed up but the text is great. Pictures come out great as well. I've also converted some book chapters to kindle for my research stuff and it has been so much more convenient than carrying around textbooks.

I assume if you actually buy the kindle version of case files or pretest from amazon, the tables will come out fine. Make fun all you want, but it actually is so convenient and efficient to have with you during down time on rotations!

Not to mention, I only have to charge my kindle about once a month and I use it almost every day.

I have some pdfs that I sent to my kindle but one whole page is being compressed onto the 6 inch screen. How do I convert a pdf to kindle format? Which I am assuming means that an appropriate amount of text appears on the screen. Thanks!

Email it to your kindle account ([email protected]) as an attachment with "convert" in the subject line. I can't remember how you get your free kindle email account, but it's somewhere on the home screen of your kindle once your kindle is activated. There is a help topic on the amazon website for this if you do a google search.

Hmm okay. I was able to make the pdf into a kindle file but there is still one page of pdf on the screen at a time, which is way too small.... is that normal?

It sounds like you still have it in pdf format. If you have to zoom in to see text because the page size looks off, it is still a pdf. When you have it in kindle format, the display looks like any other kindle book and you have the ability to change font sizes to show more or less text per page.

Can you search documents in a kindle fire [stupid question, but i had to ask]. Also, is there a table of contents with hyperlinks etc. For example, i have pocket medicine on PDF and it has bookmarks on the side;are those accessible on the kindle? Seriously considering getting one of these.
