I suffered from vertigo a month ago and since then I had been experiencing constant ringing in my left ear - Tinnitus. I went to my ENT physician and he said he has to do a hearing test to determine whether the damage to my nerve is permanent or temporary. If God forbidden, its permanent then I would have high-pitched ringing sound in my left ear for the rest of my life...🙁

I don't have ipod or anything that I listen to all the time, just couple of shows on Hulu sometimes. It really sucks to have buzzing 24/7 for the rest of your life.

I was just curious whether Tinnitus is common and how would it effect you in med school - listening to stethoscopes etc.

Any views?

Hi. All kidding aside, there are treatments for tinnitus. It seems yours started with an inner ear disorder and, hopefully, will subside on its own. You should really see your FP, or talk to your ORL guy again. Some of the medications prescribed for tinnitus include antiepileptics/mood stabilisers, anxiolytics (benzodiazepines), antidepressants (tricyclics, SSRIs) and even benadryl. I have heard about herbs (periwinkle, kava kava, gingko), but I don't know how valid those claims are. There are also calcium channel blockers, but those may counteract antidepressants. Anyway, just talk to your doctor about your options. I received good feedback about lamotrigine, but that medication has to be started gradually with a very small daily dose to avoid getting a life threatening side effect rash.
