They will only tell you a few weeks before school starts. It's weird, but the admission commitee is usually very unorganized! By the way, FAMU accepts those who go to FAMU for prerequistes before anyone else. From what I heard, they only accepted three tranfsfer students. Keep your hopes up though, don't be disencouraged!

Hi there! I had an interview with FAMU about 2 weeks ago, we haven't heard anything back from them as of yet....keep looking out for a phone call, they called me before 8 on a wednesday morning giving me interview times for the next day...it wasn't too much of a problem for me about the date of the interview, since I've been up here doing research for the past two months...but be prepared to have to make an unexpected trip up here (not sure where you are from)...my friend had to drive from miami to get up here for the next day....hope that helps you a little

I haven't heard anything yet either and it is kind of annoying. I recieved a letter from them mid march that my application was complete but nothing since. I have called 3 times, as well, at the beginning of May, June and actually today. I am told, repeatedly, that if I haven't recieved a denial letter by now that it is a good thing. That the committee is still reviewing applications and that there is no time frame to give. I hope they don't wait until a few weeks before classes to send out letters. I about to loose it waiting.

Thanks for the reply guys. WOW is this true only three people a term. That's not alot!! What do you guys think the competitive GPA for acceptance is?

Hey lola69r,

How was the interview? I heard it's different if you're not from FAMU. Essay? I'm in the same boat as jaderok!

Thanks

Yea I would like to know about the interview as well. What was the format? Did it take all day? What did they ask?

In a class comprised about 120 students, about 100-110 come from FAMU pre-pharmacy class, and about 10-15 are transfer students, it really depends on how the pre-oharmacy class performed because they are always picked first, and then the selection process moves on to transfer students.

And then someone asked about the format of the interview, when I had mine it consisted of pretty standard interview questions. Why do you want to be a pharmacist, where do you see yourself in 10 years, how will you use what you will learn to impact the community, I had 2 C's so they asked about both of those, and then they ended to interview asking me if I had any questions for them. I hope that cleared everything up. Good luck to everyone trying to get in, I know it seems like it is taking a little too long, but stay on them and keep calling.

I was wondering for those who are NON-FAMU students and have had an interview with them what is your GPA? Also is it true they don't do interviews for everyone. Or do they give everyone an interview that they plan to invite.

Question for ya'll. I never sent in any letters of recommendation to FAMU because they never asked for any.

Did you?

Another week gone by and still no word from FAMU. This is really frustrating.

I work for Ms. Forbes an advisor for the pharm dept. and I know for a fact that about 50 percent of the the class that is supposed to enter this fall, have not met the required pre-reqs. They are taking the classes this summer and will apply for the fall. If you are a transfer applicant you prob. won't be accepted. They are turning away 3.8 gpa's from other schools but accepting 2.5 gpa's from Famu students who haven't even completed the pre-reqs. But thats just the way it is at Fam.

Wow had a dumb moment there, I don't really agree with that figure. There are some people who have a low gpa, but quite a few of them know it means to work harder as opposed to just keeping those bad habits and just dropping out. I know you work for the advisor and there are probably some things that go on behind the scenes but that comments makes a very good pharmacy school look very bad, alot of the pre-pharm kids went through a lot too but to go so far as to put out there that its a bunch of kids who can barely pass their classes, is simply a work of fiction.

Wow that's reassuring. It is a little annoying that they are stringing everyone along for this long. How can people apply for pharm school in the fall at the end of this semester? I thought everything had to be turned in by February 1? Since you work for an advisor, does that mean that I shouldn't expect to hear anything until mid-August?

wow!!! lol that's kind of crazy lets keep all our C students and put them to our pharm school b/c they are in our pre pharm program and turn down student that worked hard and done well in there pre pharm classes at a different university. Turning down 3.8 for 2.5 doesn't make any sense at all. I really just don't understand why they are taking this long to tell people if they are accepted or not

It seems like your best chance at FAMU is to go there for the entire 6 years. For those of you just starting your prereqs and want to attend this school, you might want to consider that option.

Do they give any preference to students who earned their B.S. from FAMU and later decided to pursue pharmacy?

Yet another week with no word!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I dont understand the logic behind making people wait so long.

I asked one of the pharmacists at my rotation who went to FAMU. She said that the school was set up as a 6 year school. Vacancies are filled for students that don't make it through the first two years. It's possible that some students are trying to make up a bad grade during summer session. They won't know if the seat is available until the end of the summer term. This would explain their delay in getting back to people.

Yea I'm starting my pre-pharmacy right now at FAMU and they told us that they only leave at most 10 spots for people that weren't in the 0-6 program. But maybe you'll get lucky and more spots will be available if some of the pre-pharm don't complete prereqs or keep 2.75 GPA.

Wow that's amazing you only need 2.75 to get into pharm school there!!! What's also amazing is they turn down people with like 3.5 and up!!!

Its a 6 year program only reason they say you can apply is because there's always going to be people that mess up but not a lot so usually only about 6 or 7 spots. But a lot of kids coming from high school are trying to jump on it. There were white, asian, hispanic, and all kinds of kids there.

The idea of the 0+6 is to keep the grad students in-house. It serves two purposes.

1 - It means they have tuition from that student for 6 years (as long as they select good applicants anyway)

2 - Compliments the overall goal of serving its demographic. FAMU wants certain students to come to their school - additionally, they want those students to stay.

I think the 0+6 programs are used to cover other issues at the school. The Dual enrollment program at NOVA is used in this manner. Nova is praying for students to enroll in the CLAS - so much so that they offer 0+6 as long as you promise to attend CLAS for 2 years and double up to finish your BS in the first 2 years of grad school (so 2 undergrad - last 2 undergrad and first 2 of grad - then last 2 of grad)

At any rate - I wont be applying to FAMU 🙁

~above~

FAMU does the 6 year program to keep a certain student demographic. Some of the FAMU students that I have seen really are not qualified to be in pharmacy school. Most of the 6 year students are bright and could make it anywhere; however, their minimum GPA for a FAMU student is 2.5 so they are some who get a free pass. FAMU also has a bridge program associated with the Hillsborough CC that guarantees them about 5 spots. The number of true transfer students varies from year to year but I would say the average is about 10 a year. Applying to FAMU as a transfer is very frustrating, to say the least. I applied to both UF and FAMU last year. I received my UF acceptance in April, my FAMU “INTERVIEW” in late June, and my acceptance in mid July. I had a 3.8 BTW.

2.5 is not the minimum they say 2.75 but most of the students going in have atleast a 3.3. If you do have a 2.75 they'll will question you're readiness of getting in because everyone else's gpa is so much higher. Also if they're not prepared for pharmacy school then they won't graduate because the curriculum is NOT easier than any other school. Dr. Thomas told us of the "extra" things they require here and there just so that critics or naysayers can't have anything to say. The school is meant to be a 6 year porgam not really for applicants just for pharm school. By the pharmacy school is very multi-racial, asians, hispanics, whites, so there's no "demographic" agenda.

I was wondering if this was true, i was reading in the FAMU Supplement 2006 and it states they don't interview every applicant. So i was wondering this late in the game if your a non FAMU student and have not got an interview does this mean theres no hope

I think it will be November and then Famu will decide to send out acceptance letters.

I got a rejection letter back at the end of March. A couple of weeks ago I got an email saying my financial aid package was ready, but it won't let me login online. Go figure. A classmate of mine got a rejection letter the same time as me, and then got an acceptance letter in June, and she had to decide within three days. So in other words, who really knows.

Wow that sounds like famu. Has anyone else recieved any word? I still haven't received anything yet.

Im in the same boat as you jad. Transfer app. and have not heard anything yet the last thing i heard was app completed and that was a while ago. I also just check my FAMU login and my finaid is ready to go with like a list of rewards and loans.??

Well at least it let you login! I get rejected but I got finaid? That makes no sense, I guess I got in to the University just not Pharmacy.

The sickening part of this whole equation is that if you aren't one of their 0+6 students then you are only filling a fiscal void.

This would also explain, in part, why FAMU does not use pharmcas.

I guess I wasted one of my freebie PCAT designations and that really sucks because I have heard nothing but good things about their program to this point. 😡

DJH...Have you called the college of pharmacy yet? I have called a few times and they tell me each time that they are still reviewing apps and if I haven't received a rejection letter yet that that is a good thing. The last time I called the lady told me that they had over 1000 apps this year and that is why it is taking long. I wanted to say something like, "So that means you have to work?" but I didn't because I figured I would wait to piss them off until I get in. At any rate, the waiting is killing me. I am trying to plan things for next semester and I need to know where I will be.

I would give up on FAMU if I were you.
Try to apply to more schools next year.

Jad... Everyone is saying they are really not with the game when it comes to accept/rejection letters(even there own addmissions office). I've try calling but pretty much get the same answers as you. pretty much the way i'm looking at it is there may be spots at the end of the list if any of there students didn't make it or decline a spot then were IN!!! B/c if we weren't good enough they would of sent letter of reject a while ago. If you don't mind PM your stats when you applied like GPA and stuff to compara with me and see if we are in the same boat with out stat. Another thing is no interviews or atleast i haven't heard anyone with an interview that is a transfer???

I heard all kinds of rumors about the pharmacy school at FAMU. If you are a non-FAMU student, I think the best way to maximize your chance is to get to know FAMU staffs that actually work for College of Pharmacy or simply the science department. That's what I'm doing, and I hope it helps.

Any luck on new info from FAMU guys the last week of july already and nothing yet?

I got a call last week saying that I was recommended for admittance into their pharmacy school, and that I should be receiving a letter in the mail sometime this week...she made sure to emphasize the fact that a recommendation was not an acceptance though, and to check my mail...anyone else get a call like this?

Nope! I called today and they said there still a couple of interviews and response should come out by the end of this week. I don't know tho i get different answers every time i call

I got my acceptance letter yesterday, we have to fax back a form saying we either accept or reject admission by August 7th so they can ensure that any spots left open have time to be filled before school starts...so don't give up, I know of a few people who if accepted will reject admission because FAMU took too long to make their decisions and they've decided to attend elsewhere

FAMU is a school based on race, no one in their right mind can deny this. they are more lenient toward certain groups and also they will take a massive percent of their students rather than from outside. Its not fair nor is it right that students there who make 40 and 50 pcat composite (i know quite a few) who get accepted rather than someone who doubles their composite and works their but off.

This school is on probation for a reason and i hope changes are made or its shut down.

I have heard that FAMU is having a problem with money. They might lose their accreditation. Check it out before you go there. In addition, in their website, there will not interview except for some special cases.

Your right Pharmpill, it is a school based on race, and thats for a reason. 30 and 40 years ago when segregation was still intact "other" schools wouldn't let "those other races" attend there schools, so what do you expect them to do? At most schools the % of minority students is so low its just an embarrassment, so you should be happy for this school taking pride in its own students and minorities instead of hating on them...

1.What you think they are probation for is probably a totally different reason from the real one.
2.Ok.... FAMU is a HBCU, of course the majority are going to be minorities. there are 3 other schools in Florida and 100s elsewhere. please think about what you wrote. right now you are acting like FAMU is the end all and be all of pharmacy schools.
