I'm an MSIII DO student interested in PM&R and I was wondering if anyone has applied to, or matched with, a 4 year program and tried to get AOA approval for the allopathic internship year. When the AOA came to my school, they said that you needed to apply for approval in advance, and they made it seem relatively painless if you had some justification. However, I've heard stories that the whole process is ridiculous and the AOA gives you a hard time. I have a feeling they want more than 'this program fit me best' or 'this is where my family wanted to locate' etc. They also said that you may be asked to do something 'osteopathic' (lectures, rotations, etc.) to supplement. I personally like OMM and would be willing to teach a seminar in OMM to MDs or some form of teaching at a DO school or hospital. Let me know if anyone has had any experience with this situation.

I heard that at RIC - DOs did NOT have trouble getting AOA approval for the intern year.

However, I know that since UPenn suddenly decided to only accept 4yr categorical residents this year and could NOT guarantee AOA approval, many of the osteopathic applicants were upset.

So, I would guess it is program specific. If someone else did it before you, obviously, it's easier to get approval.

I think it also depends on the state. I think PA and FL for example require an AOA intern year - some allopathic programs have dual accreditation.
