So what does it take to get into AOA for your school? How many people get it? Is it something you should really push for, or is it just another gratuitious honor?

Try to search the forums and your own school website for this. From what I hear everyone wants AOA, it helps add something to your application and dean's letter. It is not easy though, we are all smart and it's not something anyone would refuse. Good luck 👍

AOA is not the same at all medical schools. In a nutshell, it is restricted to the top 20-25% of your class. This may be based soley on academics, or academics in addition to service to school and community.

It looks good on a CV when applying for residency, but it is not necessary. People get into great residencies without being elected.

I hear you have to be a ninja to get AOA. fo reals.

It doesn't seem like there are critera for being nominated or elected. For anyone who has been AOA, what do you feel was important in getting the honor?

Hi there,
You can be selected for AOA (Alpha Omega Alpha) at the end of your third year (about 1% of medical students) or at the end of your fourth year, as a resident or faculty member. Selection is based on the chapter at your school. Every chapter has different criteria for selection but scholarship is a major part of the selection. It is not the ONLY part of the selection process however.

Do realize that some schools do not have a chapter of AOA. There is a box on ERAS to indicate if you school does not have a chapter so do not fret if you are not selected. It is not the end of the world and you can still get into residency. If selected, there are some neat little peaks like the little gold key for your lab coat that I have lost at least 3 times and keep having to replace.

If you're applying to residencies and you get AOA at the end of 4th year, how will the residencies you applied to know?

Hi there,
Your Deans letter will give a good indication if you are going to make AOA. This is usually in the last paragraph which leaves a good impression.

Very true. Dean's letters don't go out until usually Novemter 1st. By then, virtually all schools will have chosen/voted on senior AOA. If your school isn't going to, then you had better make some noise!!!

I'm going to ensure that our school does our elections in early October, which will give the new senior members plenty of time to update ERAS/SFMatch, have it included on their Dean's letters, and celebrate. Making AOA is not "everything," but it is certainly an accomplishment that deserves recognition.

Good luck to all.
