Taking AOBIM exam tomorrow and can't find anywhere that tells me how many questions to expect so that I can plan my time and breaks. Only thing I can find says the test is 7 hrs and there is a mandatory break after 3.5 hours. Anybody know how many questions and how many breaks are allowed?? thanks!

I took the exam too and spent countless hours before searching for AOBIM specific information. It doesn't exist! I trained in an allopathic program so the focus was on ABIM prep which I was convinced was more than sufficient to pass AOBIM! However, there should at least be published resources on the nature of the exam. I think it is a very different exam than ABIM unfortunately. Even the people at the testing center were not sure exactly when my breaks were or how I could split up the exam. I ended up doing 3.5 solid hours of questions, took a 60 minute lunch and returned for another painful 3.5 hours- I don't even know how many questions were on the exam. I have always been a champion of osteopathic medicine, but I must say when I take exams like that I question my certifying organization. It was nothing like what I expected. Most of the questions had very short stems- you either knew it or needed more info. Its the kind of exam that you think is easy, but the questions are so poorly worded and written that even when you seem confident about your answer there is a little bit of an unsettled feeling about what the test writers were actually getting at. I had no statistics questions, no OMM, almost no geriatrics, lots of inflammatory arthritis/rhuematology, lots of heart murmurs, medication indications/containdications, pregnant patients with thyroid problems, and oddly enough TONS of immunology questions-uh ok. There was an antiquated Swan Cath wave form that looked like it had been eaten by a dog and a cardiac tamponade EKG that was blurry also some poorly exposed chest x-ray fragments and lots of blood smears. Needless to say I am glad it is over- I am "hopefully certain" I passed but I am still annoyed by so many of the questions. Maybe ABIM people feel the same way-but the AOBIM needs a serious new face and update-like a website with good information and a test tutorial similar to ABIM. I suppose with a >90% pass rate they are not to concerned about preparation- but it certainly doesn't make for a happy day or help my test anxiety! We should start a SDN board for AOBIM specific info-maybe this post will help next year's group! I'm sure you did very well. Good Luck.
