Ok guys help me out.

My stats:

Overall GPA 3.4 120 Credits
Sci GPA 3.6
150 PT hours
150 OT hours (primarily SNF and a bit of home care)

I am planning to send apps to:

Western Michigan Univ- I'm a Michigan resident and I think they only count last 60 creds.
Wayne State- Live near here
Howard- Why not.
Dominican Cali- Dunno

I feel that my overall GPA is low, so I think I need to concentrate on private schools instead of the big state schools.

Any others to add to the list?

Are you looking at Howard because you are African-American and want a "traditionally black university"? I believe one of the N. Carolina state schools is too. DC is a very expensive place to live, and Howard tuition isn't cheap.

If you are a Michigan resident, there are several other schools to choose from. Why not apply to them all?

Im not african american.

Michigan schools:
Baker- Need to take their courses. No transfer according to the director.
GVSU- Seems to be up their GPA wise. I might still apply.
Ferris-DUnno
Saginaw- A ton of courses I do not have.

Why not Howard? I applied there last cycle and I am not African-American. I was offered an interview but I turned it down because I had already accepted an offer to my #1 school. I applied to Howard because I know it is a respectable school and that I would love to live in D.C. Had I not gotten into my #1 choice, I would have been proud to go to Howard and from the conversation I had with the people there, I would have truly enjoyed it there.

I live in the DC area now (live in Virginia, work in DC), and don't really like it here. A lot of self-important, workaholic people and if you don't have much money, your social life is a lot more limited.

If you are interested in activism, it is harder to make an impact because so many other people here are also activists.

Not much of activist or rich. But it is a step up from where I go to school now.

What do you guys think of the Developing programs like Salus and Florida Hospital.

Is it somewhat easier to get into?

I don't know, but I'm planning on visiting Salus. Then applying. I almost considered applying this year, just for the fun of it. But it is kind of important to finish my second semester of A&P first, and that is this fall.

My guess is that Salus may be very easy to get into for 2012, because they only got approved as a developing program in May and their school starts in the fall.

I might apply to Howard, but the cost of attendance, cost of living, and my dislike of DC means I'm unlikely to go there unless I have few options. That might change if I visit there, but I don't know.

I wouldn't apply to a school soley based on it's reputation or ranking in that U.S. News report that everyone seems to think is the "bible" of OT school rankings. Apply somewhere you're going to be comfortable: Is the school in a town you like? Do the professors seem nice and knowledgeable?

Choosing a school is important, but don't over-think it. I've been told by more than a few OT's that nobody cares which school you graduated from. That you should go somewhere you can afford and somwhere you think you'll be successful. Once we're all done with this process, we'll all be OT's. Nobody gets to be an "OT from an expensive school" or an "OT from the best school".
