Has anyone heard of people getting interviews at VAs if they do not have VA practicum experience? I'm hearing mixed things on this!

Multiple others have replied to your post, but I wanted to add one more: I ultimately matched at a VA, and interviewed at a handful of others, with no VA experience in grad school. This was at the height of the internship imbalance.

I have no VA experience and no experience with veterans and got an invite to Phoenix VA. A classmate last year had interviews at 8 VAs with no experience either. It seems like the type of experience you have and if it’s applicable to that site is more important (for example, I have tons of health psychology experience and applied to the health psych track).

This may be kind of an odd question but when people are receiving rejections via email, is anyone responding back with a thank you for your consideration type of response? Just curious what best practice might be. Part of me feels it is a kind gesture to close the loop and part of me feels like TDs may not want to get bombarded with responses like these. Thoughts?

I was rejection from one of the Harvard Med School sites and sent an email saying thank for for your time and consideration. I got an immediate response back and they were really nice about it. Not sure if it's best practice, but I figured it wouldn't hurt.

Basing rankings on the written application doesn’t mean they are basing it on objective factors. The only objective factors are the number of hours and practicum sites.
Intervention hours, assessment hours, range of population experience, pubs, posters, dissertation progress, tons of objective factors, which derive most of the rank weight at a lot of places. The only real high weight subjective factor here and my past sites was quality of grad program.

I have only received one rejection so far, but i did send a thank you for your consideration and time email. And plan to do so for any other rejections. One of the people in my program ended up getting an interview because they responded to a rejection in this manner and impressed the TD with the thoughtfulness. I would guess that this person was already a close contender and in the end its a judgment call. But also, if they have post docs that you would potentially apply for, this is a nice way to keep you in their memory. They wont remember the specifics of your internship app because they see so many. But something like this could stand out for future types of applications, in my personal opinion. Good luck and i say- do what feels right for you!

No VA experience and so far, I've received interview invitations from 5 VAs. However, I do have considerable experience in academic medical center environments, including experience in SMI treatment and integrated behavioral health settings (and a couple different EMRs...) so I've been told that probably helped. I don't study veterans or trauma, but I did pitch the relevance of my research to the veteran population in my cover letters.

yay! Same rotation as me. I am crossing my fingers for an interview here.

Got rejected from Central Arkansas VA and Tampa VA neuro tracks just now. They are following a pattern. Basically, any invitations I saw go out about a week ago, if I didnt get one, I am getting the rejection letters now. Out of my 8 rejections, 6 are from VAs. I really don't know what to think anymore. I really am hating this process. It really busts you down in the ego department.

Was this for the Salud spot or AF Williams? Congrats!

Hi all, I have a question! If a site lists in their brochure that they will contact applicants when they receive a completed application, and you haven’t heard anything (their deadline was November 1 and I know others have already received interview invites), is it ok if to contact them to confirm they have the materials? I’m not sure how much sites really stick to actions like that but, but I’m inclined to expect I should have been notified when they got my materials since it’s listed in their brochure. Thanks for the input!

Reaching out sounds totally reasonable to me!

I just emailed one of my rejections I just got asking for feedback. This worked the other day when the Cleveland VA rejected me. Their director got back to me within the hour. I asked because there are still sites, especially like 5 VAs that still have December deadlines, so, if I decide to apply, I want to make sure I don't end up making the same errors (if I did).

Rejected from The Medical College of Wisconsin - Health Psychology Residency Program. ...but they included "however, we thought your application was quite competitive. Should the opportunity to interview arise, we will reach out." I'm not sure if that's false hope or a legitimate waitlist.
what a tease!

It's great that they replied so quickly - was the feedback useful at all?

Not so much lol. Basically, they stated that there were no major red flags or anything the committee just objected to. They didn't make any overt notes on my application. Basically, they said out of 145 applicants for 7 spots, I did not make it to the top 90. I am hoping that my email I just sent one of the sites I just got rejected from might be more helpful.

Sorry if I missed earlier posts on this topic. Has anyone reached out to any TDs to gently ask if it would be possible to interview at their site on another date that was not offered? If so, how did it go? I am worried that TDs may view this as offputting, but I am trying to avoid flying to the same place first in early Jan and late Jan to attend interviews at two sites located near each other.

Any thoughts/advice would be much appreciated!

I was told that VA experience helps a lot, but isn't required by any means. However, VA experience seems to be "necessary" for post-doctoral positions per my friend's advice. This came from someone who has gone through this process and is highly knowledgable with regard to how VA's hire/operate. Plenty of people get interview invites without prior VA practicum experience from what I can tell. Good luck!

A postdoc at my site had no prior VA experience. She’s also very, very competent though.

I had that fear but have gotten interviews at all the VAs I applied to! I think you do get a “point” on your score if you have worked at a VA before, but it’s not make or break! Don’t lose hope!!

Adding a bit more anecdotal experience: I had no prior VA experience before internship, but then did internship and am doing fellowship at a VA. Definitely possible. One of my current co-fellows has no previous VA experience either.

I just got approved to post, and I want to start by saying how wonderful reading the posts of encouragement have been in helping to prevent me from spiraling down a black hole of despair and low self esteem...we have such a wonderful group of individuals in our field!

I am wondering when it is appropriate for me to panic. So far, I have received 7 rejections out of 17 sites where I applied, and I am beginning to get worried. I know I am applying to competitive sites (predominantly child/adolescent/IBH tracks at academic medical centers), so I am trying to temper my expectations, but should I be considering applying to remaining programs that have a December 1 deadline? I just want to be smart and realistic about this entire experience!

Applied to Montefiore and Columbia but haven't heard back yet. I believe people posted about hearing back from Bellevue but it might've been the adult track. Last year's trends show that Columbia contacts people around late-November (should probably be coming soon)! And Montefiore gets back to people around early-December. Notifications seem to be relatively later across the board this year, though.

Hello All,
I have been so encouraged by reading everyone's posts in this forum. The posts have helped me to stay calm during this process and I just had to join to voice my appreciation to everyone!! It is really nice to know that I am not alone!! I have heard back from three of the 13 sites I applied to. So I love being a part of cheering each other when we get interviews and encouraging each other when the answer is "not this time"

Someone in my program heard from the Geisinger hospital track child a few days ago. They said it was a mass email. Someone in my site heard from a place, so I assumed I was rejected. I heard from that site a few days later with an acceptance. You never know!

Check spam for Geisinger!
