APPIC Internship Interview Invitation Thread (2020)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Official Site Name: Edith Nourse Rogers Memorial VA Medical Center
Date Invitation Received: 11/26/19
Method of Invitation (Phone call, personal/mass email, snapchat): Mass email
Specialty Track or Site (e.g., for consortiums): Neuropsychology
Offered Interview Dates: 12/12, 12/17, 1/9, 1/14
(In honor of last year) If & How you're staying sane: Define sane

For training directors- when you say “we are open to phone or in person interviews. We do not require an onsite interview”

is this real or is it a trap to weed out less interested people? -_-
Because it would be awesome to save money and do a phone interview! But not if it’s a trap? D:

What do we do in the event of an interview day conflict? Just my luck, two of my top sites are interviewing on the same day. I feel like I could fall apart right now...

So I have noticed many neuro and VA sites have replied...or is it that we have a lot of applicants on the forum that are aiming for this type of site?

anyone here apply to child focused sites?🙂)

Agreed! I am child focused! Some sites I’ve applied to have been posted here but others I haven’t seen anything about. I have heard from 6 sites of 20 (I went a little- ham -I think). You? Anything you’re anxiously awaiting?

It'll vary by site. If they say it, probably fine. At my site, and past sites, it would have likely kept you static in the rankings, so fine if you are in the top group. I've only ever had one phone interview match to a site of mine, and the student was top 3 in initial rankings.

Cohort member got an email for interview at Princeton House for mid-January. That's all I got. I know it was not the ED track.

One (momentous institute) pulled out of the match, and I have got interviews at two! Waiting to hear back on 11 sites...

A trap? No. Not at all. I’m sorry this process is so stressful.

Sorry to bump, but could someone please advise? 🙁

Neither have an alternate day? Could you do Skype on a different day? I also know someone who was able to do a Skype interview at a different site during lunch break at the first site.

Thank you so much for replying. And sadly, no...the alternate days for those sites overlap with interviews I already have (they only provided three days). I am hoping the TD will be open to me coming on a different day...

So if these are your top 2, maybe sacrifice one of the days you have scheduled other interviews on? I am sorry, this is such a nightmare. So many sites have the same dates, and with invites coming at different times, its so difficult to coordinate.

I had two sites that don't do phone/skype interviews and couldn't offer other dates. The training programs were pretty similar, so ultimately I accepted the invite I received first (which is in a city with a lower cost of living) and declined the second invitation. If the sites don't have flexibility, it doesn't leave many options.

Is there one site you prefer? Or a site with a preferable location, cost of living, etc.?

I am child focused too! I almost applied to momentous. I’ve heard back mostly just in the past week.... no response from 12 still out of 19 (also went a little cray on the apps) ‍♀️

I was at ABCT and I heard that McLean Hospital sends out their invitations/rejections in waves by geographical region of the applicant. Also the Palo Alto VA will be sending out their offers around the first week of December. Just thought I'd update everyone!
Thanks for sharing! Just wanted to add that it also sounded like McLean won’t start sending out until after Thanksgiving.

Generally not a trap (although if it is, that says something pretty strongly about the site/faculty). We have most of the info we need from your applications and rankings don't change too much from there. However, if it's a site you think you may rank highly, I would encourage you to go. I think the in-person interviews are much more important for the applicants. By visiting a site and meeting the faculty and current trainees, it can really help you get a feel for what it might be like. Applicants' rankings often change after visiting sites.

Good Morning!

Has anyone heard from the following sites:

Lehigh University
Geisinger Medical Center-Child (Hospital Based)
Youth Consultation Services
Veteran Affairs New Jersey Health Care System
Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences
Rutgers Student Health-CAPS

If I have not heard from these sites and others have gotten invitations should I just take it as a rejection?

This probably goes for all sites, but you’re not rejected until you’re rejected. Every site is variable, sometimes there’s waves sometimes they just haven’t sent an update. I know this process is terrible, but just hold on you will get through it!

Someone in my program heard from the Geisinger hospital track child a few days ago. They said it was a mass email. Someone in my site heard from a place, so I assumed I was rejected. I heard from that site a few days later with an acceptance. You never know!

Lehigh will likely be sending out its interview offers closer to the 15th. Typically, UCC's don't respond until after the Thanksgiving break at the earliest.

Rankings dont change too much from there!? That is kind of sad to think about... That our interview doesnt influence the process too much 🙁

It's a positive. The majority of the ranking should be based on objective factors. The interview is really more about your chance to see and evaluate the program, rather than the other way around. Interviews tend to slide people down the rankings more than slide some people up (e.g., people who are rude, glaring personality problems, etc).

I applied to Rutgers CAPS and have not heard anything.
