APPIC Internship Interview Invitation Thread (2020)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Me neither lol. I have never heard of someone having to write something during the interview!

It sure is odd. My doctoral program required us to read an article then write an analysis as we waited to go into our individual interviews.

I tried this. But I found that rejections often have something like "Application" and invitations say "Interview" so I see a word and react.
Mine is titled “application”....

so heres my answer lol guess i can wait to open it 😛

Has anyone heard from the VA in Augusta or South Florida State Hospital? Also, can someone confirm that the Orlando VA sent out invites already so I should just have them in my rejection list?
I have a friend who applied to the VA in Augusta who hasn't heard anything and we both applied to South Florida State Hospital with no news either. Their notification date is tomorrow I think! Orlando VA did send out invites as well. I have a feeling tomorrow is going to be a BIG day for news one way or another 🙂

I just saw in the original list that Augusta sent out texts (wtf?) on 11/26 & 11/27 sooo I guess that's that.

So question...if I go into round 2, can I apply to sites that initially rejected me for an interview? Or just new sites altogether? I know someone that had an interview round 1 and interviewed with them again round 2 and matched, but I wasn't sure about an initial rejection.

Yes! In phase 2 you can apply to sites that rejected you in phase 1.

I remember seeing in an earlier page that someone posted match rates by number of interviews received. I can't find the page. Would someone please repost that info?

Also, if there is a link to the original source, that would be great--I couldn't find it in the match statistics released by APPIC.

Ah, I'm still waiting on this one (and 3 other sites). But personal emails take longer, so maybe mine's coming soon!
Congrats! I know people who have completed internship and post-doc there and really loved it!

I’m also waiting to hear from them (and 2 others).

I’ve heard great things!

Me neither lol. I have never heard of someone having to write something during the interview!

I had a written section during my interview yesterday. About 3 of my interviews mentioned in the interview email that there would be a written section. Honestly I full on panicked when I read that but it wasn’t that bad.

Has anyone already been through at least one interview that would like to share a difficult interview question you were asked that caused you to stumble?

I have practiced the basic questions about my professional/personal goals, interests, research, strengths/weaknesses, clinical cases, so I feel I have a general understanding of what my answers will be. I am most worried about the random ones that will throw me off the ball. 🙈

I attended 6 interviews 2 years ago and got a range of questions -

Most difficult case, describe a crisis your client/patient has experienced, worst supervisory experience, Describe why this is an ethical dilemma and in which way (with vignette), given a neurospsych vignette and asked for a diagnosis, given some MMPI scores and asked to interpret (that was terrifying!), What do you see most challenging here should you match, how do you know when you're stressed.....the MMPI one freaked me out lol

What types of sites required writing samples? Were any of them VAs? All my interviews are VAs, general track, so I'm hoping the interviews will be fairly straightforward (and not like a test).

Yep - theres reduced outcomes after too many

I'm curious as to what contributes to that...do you possibly have the link or citation for that or is it a graph you saw independently.

I remember reading it in the APPIC stats info, and also it was in the graph! And my dct talked about it.

VA's and AMCs - I remember specifically Tulane and possibly Jackson/Miami

Ahh maybe I should search for it then while I wait for the remaining interview offers or rejections LOL

Wait....so someone with 14+ offers has lower rate of matching??? HUH? (in reference to the graph of interview offers and match)
I've heard too many interviews can be as bad as or worse than too few. If there's too many, then scheduling is complicated, and the travel and interview process can be very expensive, exhausting, and stressful, which can come across during the actual interview. Maybe if people have fewer interviews, they present as less tired and more eager/enthusiastic? I've known people who matched well with 1 interview, and I've also known people who did not match despite having 15+ interviews.

Has anyone reached out after a rejection for feedback and found it helpful? A training director (in a rejection email) said that if there were any questions about the selection process to reach out. I would like feedback on my application to know what could be improved, but also don't want to be a bother.

I’m assuming the sites that asked you to interpret assessment data were more focused on psychological testing than therapy?

I just hope I get at least one more....I applied to 11 and I'm sitting over here with only 1 offer.

Waiting on Avondale, Guilford, Lewisville, and The School at Columbia.

That’s intense but at least they gave you a heads up. What kinds of sites did this, hospitals?

It's been super quiet over here! Anyone heard from:

Mount Sinai Services at Elmhurst Hospital
Mount Sinai Adolescent Health Center
Westchester Jewish Community Services

Thanks 🙂

I wonder how much those numbers have changed since there is no longer such a huge discrepancy between number of applicants and number of internship positions.

Good questions because the data is from 2009- 2011 (published in 2014), that's a while ago and a lot has changed since then.
