APPIC Internship Interview Invitation Thread (2020)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I have sat with deciding to respond to this for several days. I am a previous intern and I don’t believe it is ethical for me to stay silent. The environment at SCS was incredibly toxic and was rampant with sexual harassment. I would be happy to share more about what occurred during my year there in a private message. I’d encourage anyone who is interviewing with SCS to ask how they address trainee safety, and how previous trainee complaints have been addressed.
Very brave to share this. Thank you for protecting potential interns!

For all you neuropsychology folks, did any of you have to answer neuroanatomy questions or respond to a clinical sample/vignette in your interviews? I have been studying and reviewing like crazy just in case it comes up. A few of my friends took neuroanatomy in their first year, so they were really rusty during the first set of interviews since it had been so long. I have this re-occurring nightmare that I forget everything I know during my interviews and totally blank. :dead:
I have had a couple of interviews so far and it seems the case vignettes are common. Most of my site interviews indicate they will be presenting one.

Date Invitation Received: 12/15/19
Method of invitation (phone call, personal/mass email, Snapchat): Personal email
Specialty track or site (e.g. for consortiums): N/A
Offered Interview Dates: 1/16 and 1/17

I think this will be my last invite, and I'm so glad to finally have my schedule set!

I see that the ranking submission deadline is Feb 7 and we get results Feb 21. Anyone know why there is a two week wait? What goes on during that time? Isn't it just a computer algorithm that matches us?

My training director told us the algorithm is running during these two weeks. Not sure if this is entirely the case, but I'm sure someone can verify!

Pure conjecture, but through discussion with other applicants, we guessed that maybe sites are still ranking all their interviewees during some portion of that time.

Wow this is very brave! Thank you so much for commenting. I didn’t appply to this site but would definitely want this kind of information about sites I did apply to/will interview at.

Congratulations to everyone who has made it this far into the notification process - I hope that interviews, or least interview preparation, have been going well. It is my assumption that, generally speaking, 12/16 will be the final day of notifications for most of us. I am aware that certain sites elected for later dates for a variety of reasons, including extensions to application deadlines, etc. However, the end of 12/16 will likely be when I conclude keeping track of incoming notifications and hand my up-to-date list over to @Grenth to update the master list and add in any DM invitations. Due to the busy interviewing phase, the common notification dates of 12/15 or 12/16 (depending on year) are often the points at which the master lists are solidified for Phase I. I cannot speak for Grenth as it pertains to how long the list will be tracked and updated for the outlier sites, but we will certainly do our best.

I believe the algorithm is run and then a lot of double checking occurs to make sure there were no issues/errors, especially because sites have to rank you by name and you have to rank them by track. A couple of people in my cohort last year got a phone call from NMS to verify their ranks. I know it’s really anxiety provoking to have to wait two weeks but it’s also good to know they take every measure possible to ensure a solid match.

This is correct. The algorithm does not take that long to run, but it does take some time to go through the protocols to make sure that everything has run smoothly. As someone with a programming background, trust me, you should gladly trade those two weeks to make sure that those lines of code are running smoothly and doing what they are supposed to do. Two weeks is actually pretty quick given the issue.

This is the first year that they are giving them back in 2 weeks. It used to be slightly longer so I am happy for a few less days to wait.

I don't remember exactly how long it took back when I applied. I'm not an anxious waiter, so it wasn't a big deal. I had plenty of other things dissertation-related to get done, so the time period came and went in a flash.

Our cohort director has been reaching out to programs that have not notified students of their application status by the announced date because students are having to prioritize interviews over other interviews to make room for new interviews and it's creating a lot of stress because of traveling needs. Also, come to find out that a lot of internship sites don't know about the "Late Breaking Updates" listerv where everyone can get appropriate updates if notification dates have changed. If you haven't heard back, there is still hope...it ain't over until you get the "NO" email. 😎

In the mean time, change your ringtone to: SNAP - I'VE GOT THE POWER and you'll feel better! 😀

"it's gettin, it's gettin, it's getting kinda hectic!"

Wow. It takes a lot of courage to speak out...thank-you for sharing and for letting the forum know that you are available if anyone has questions. Transparency is very important and students are often in a precarious position if they don't have experience or connection to a particular site. I was at a site a few years back that had a lot of issues and although I spoke up for those involved, I was completely ignored by the site and even by my program when I reported it. Too often we shy away from what is awkward or uncomfortable, but I couldn't stand it and it was impacting everyone's mental health. Cheers, friend.

Thank you all for your kind, supportive, and encouraging words. I am aware of how stressful this process is for a multitude of reasons, trainee safety should not be added to that list. I hope everyone matches with a site where they are able to get the training experience they are seeking. It does not matter if the site is found in Phase I, II, or later. You all deserve the very best.

Cambridge Health Alliance has 9 tracks, anyone else hear from them aside from these tracks?

Child OP/Adult OP track (Track II)
CHA/Weil Foundation track (Track IV)
Adult Neuropsychology and Adult Primary Care/Behavioral Health (Track V)
Pediatric Primary Care/Behavioral Health and School-Based Mental Health Clinic (Track VI)
Adult Primary Care/Adult OP track (Track VII)

There is no info on:
Track I (Adult General Psychiatry Outpatient Service and Adult Acute Services)
Track III (A or B) - Latino Tracks
Track VIII (Population Health/Adult Outpatient/Substance Abuse Focus)
Track IX (Population Health/Child and Adolescent Outpatient/Substance Abuse)

UPDATE: I emailed the TD today and received an invite this morning. The program assistant said it was an oversight. This was the last site that needed to get back to me. Good luck everyone!

Has anyone who is waiting for a BOP notification (acceptance or rejection) sent an email to the TD yet? My other BOP's notification deadline was yesterday, I've still heard nothing, and I'm wondering if I should give it all of today before I send an email? I just would really love to know either way so I can let MDC-LA know if I'm doing the CVA and pre-employment interview with them or the other site! Down to waiting on 4 more and really hoping this is all over with today!!

I would reach out to them. There have been a lot of oversights and email issues, so it never hurts and if you're offered an interview, they usually tell you in that response email.

I emailed FMC-Lexington today and asked about my status and learned that I had been sent a rejection on 11/19 but it did not go through to my email. The TD stated issues with their email system this year.
I’d reach out!

I may have missed this but has anyone heard from University of Washington...their notification was on Friday and I am assuming a rejection at this point but I'm curious if anyone else is still waiting too?

Or University of Hawaii?

Me too!!!!! 🙂 YAY this part of the process is finally over.

Would any of you amazing, talented, kind, supportive, empathic, symmetrical, and genius human beings who have reached out to sites whose interview notification deadline has passed inquiring about your status be willing to post how you worded your email so as not to irritate over-inundated TDs while still showing interest? (Wow. Longest grammatically correct run-on sentence EVER! #winning)
