APPIC Interview Invitation Thread (2021)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
In all honesty it very well could. It happens more than people think at the college & graduate level. I went to a “prestigious” university for college & I remember chatting with admissions committee members about how they don’t take students from certain (private, expensive, “fancy”) high schools anymore because they accept many students who ended up turning them down. It’s very silly, but the people making admissions decisions are humans too. None of us can say for certain how likely it is that it’ll have a negative impact.
Thank you for your insight!

Has anyone else received a letter in the mail from DSH-Coalinga asking for your social security number? I haven't received this from any other DSH site....

Not yet! I received an email to complete the CalCareers app though!

Thank you so much for your advice! If I was really certain about wanting to withdraw, do you think that would damage other students' chances of getting interviews there in the future? I was thinking of sending a polite email stating that I need to withdraw from the interview for personal reasons, but do just want to be conscientious about how that may impact their view of my program.
If you do withdraw, I wouldn’t say that it’s for personal Reasons. To me that sounds like you got another interview on the same day and need to get out of one, and are using “personal reasons” as an excuse. I believe you that it truly may be personal reasons, but if you want to withdraw, I would just kindly say that you are withdrawing your application, no reason needed.

I would recommend first discussing this with your advisor, and like others have said, I would still interview there and use it as practice! Never hurts 🙂

One thing to consider: assuming it’s a virtual interview, dipping out now may look worse than other years when there were travel costs and bigger scheduling issues. You could always treat the interview as extra practice, test out different approaches to questions, wear a busy, patterned shirt (gasp), etc

FBOP peeps. Still no word from Butner or U.S. MC for Federal Prisoners. Anyone else? Also, I’m assuming we do an OF form for each site? I’ve gotten 3 so far.
I also have not heard from U.S. MC for Federal Prisoners!

Just a reminder: If a program decides you are not a good fit for their internship program, it doesn’t generalize to being not a good psychologist, not a good future postdoc applicant, or not a not a good intern for more “competitive” sites.

Sometimes we read great applications and say “we have nothing to teach this student; They already have great training in our areas of emphasis. This wouldn’t be a growth site for them.”
Are you a part of the admissions committee somewhere? Do you have any thoughts about reaching out to a TD to inquire as to why you might not have been invited (especially if on paper you seemed like a quality candidate)? Not out of annoyance, but as a way to strengthen your application on the off chance you don't match next year?

We get maybe a handful of such requests every year. Never hurts to ask in a tactful way. You may receive a variety of answers. I suspect many responses will be a generic "lack of fit" response. This could be due to a variety of reasons, such as the person being very busy, or it being a nice way of saying that the site doesn't take students from certain programs. Sometimes you will get a fairly detailed response about why you didn't receive an interview that can help you prepare for Phase II or next year if you do not happen to match the current cycle.

Nothing from Sharp Healthcare yet. From digging in previous years they tend to be one of the latest sites. I believe one of the previous years threads stated they have a really intense rating system that takes time?? I think they even have a notification date of 12/21 this year.

AuntSue, reporting for duty. Absolutely got my Big Auntie Ass handed to me this week with some unexpected rejections. Wiping my tears and ready for another day with a smile on my face!

A BIG old AuntSue hug to you all: For those who have gotten hoped-for offers, your AuntSue is sooo happy for you! For those who have not, I'm thinking about you and I'm still SO EXCITED to see where you end up!

Has anyone heard from Patton? Their notification date is the 15th but the past couple years, they notified 11/30 and 12/6. I'll be patient with the other 5 I'm still waiting to hear from :]

I think I'm in the minority in that I've heard back one way or another from 9/10 sites at this point.
(Yes I realize 10 is crazy low for this year...Luckily I'm in an okay enough spot right now in terms of interviews...but was freaking out for a bit when it became clear that sites were getting more than typical number of applications and I applied to so few...)

I've seen postings for interviews for University of Massachusetts Medical School/Worcester Recovery Center and Hospital. Anyone get a rejection yet?

I definitely think it just depends on which sites and what type of sites you’ve applied to. I’ve heard from 12/16 sites.

I just got offered an interview for Neuropsych at University of Florida just this morning.....I saw that they sent out invites over 2 weeks ago and then rejections last night. Did this happen to anyone else? Does this mean I am "second tier" for them?
Maybe. Which they will realize is an error when you blow them away at your interview. Congrats!!
