APPIC Interview Invitation Thread (2021)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I have a question regarding the applications in Phase 2. If we are rejected by the site and if the site participates in Phase 2, should we apply? I wonder if they rejected us probably it was not a good fit for them?
I would say, yes, definitely apply! Someone from my program re-applied to 3 sites that ended up in Phase II and ended up matching at the site that was his top choice in Phase I. I think that if we don't get an interview at this phase, it could be because we were #15 on their list and they invited 14 to interview (for him it was maybe #6 out of 5 interviewees I think?). When those 5 didn't blow the site away in interviews and/or weren't a great match, it ended up that it was meant to be for him.

If an applicant ranks a site, doesn't match, and then sees site with an unfilled spot in Phase 2... I'm pretty sure that means that the site didn't rank the applicant at all, which means that the site decided they would rather have no intern than take the applicant in question. Obviously this is a little different if it's a site that never interviewed the applicant in the first place.

So, I'm not sure what the best practice is in that situation -- Maybe reach out to the site to see if they can shed any light on what their concerns were and see if you can better address them the second time around?

I know people who were rejected in phase 1 and matched to that site in phase 2! Definitely apply if you feel it is a good fit.

If you're going to send thank you emails, I would send them individually to each person you interviewed with and add something specific from your interview to personalize it.
I have heard that this does not increase your chances of being matched. Plus imagine how many emails these people are getting.

Rejection - advocate Illinois masonic medical center. mass email 12/9

Did you apply to NDOC's other sites?

Also, how are people sending thank you emails? Do you emphasize the match between you and the site or just keep it simple?

The fact that I haven't heard back from 10 sites and we are getting so close to the final deadlines is so much more distressing and anxiety-provoking than I could have imagined. I am NOT staying sane right now.... are there others who are still in this boat?? Please tell me I am not out at sea alone.

To all feeling stressed and emotional (so...maybe everyone?):

My cohort has come up with a rejection letter drinking game. We haven't started yet but are taking suggestions for updates!

Take a drink if a site:
- wishes you well/the best/good luck with match
- says that other applicants were a better "fit"
- mentions the number of applicants
- says the applications were "competitive"
- refers to the number of applicants or the competitiveness of this cycle as "unprecedented"

Take a shot if a site:
- sends an email has a typo
- says they'll keep your application on file
- does not address the email at all (no Dear Applicant or Dear NAME)…just rejects you
- wasn't even in your top 50% of favorites but you still feel righteous anger at having been rejected

Finish your drink if:
- the rejection letter is three sentences or less
- it ended up in your spam folder (where it belongs)

[Disclaimer: this is all in good fun--just want to make the process feel less heavy and normalize that we are all going through it!]

This could just be me, but I like to personalize them, include specifics from our conversations, and definitely show my interest and excitement about their site if I truly think it is a good fit! If it's not a good fit, maybe keeping it more simple?

Yes!!! And they all have notification deadlines between now and Monday. I keep worrying if it means I am going to get 10 rejections in a day. Time to practice what I preach and use some skills I guess >.<

Waiting for 12 out of 17. I am not well.

No, I don't think it increases your chances, but it's a nice thing to do after all of the time they put into reviewing your app and interviewing you. and if they're getting too many email thank yous they have no obligation to respond. I have had 2 people respond and 2 people ignore me lol

Also waiting for 10 sites!! 😣

do you mean the other specific site options within the NCDCRC? I did not specify interest in any of the specific options (e.g., Cali state prison, valley state prison, cali men's colony), I just said I was interested in all of them on the AAPI and then did a general cover letter to NCDCRC. I'm not sure why it was valley state prison that contacted me, as i didnt specify i was interested in them specifically over the other two. did that answer your question or did you mean something else?

Finish two drinks if they say they're looking forward to meeting you and attach a rejection letter (per someone's post yesterday😳).

Oh they profusely apologized and told me that I am very much so invited to interview and to please not let this reflect poorly on them. I interviewed Tuesday and from my perspective it was absolutely phenomenal!!
Yay, good for you!!! But that beginning scenario is what my nightmares are made of. 😂

Just to jump in for a quick moment regarding thank you letters: my advice is to feel no obligation or pressure to write them, and if you do, to not worry if you don't receive any reply. The letters won't affect your chances with the site, and interviewers/faculty may elect not to respond for a variety of reasons, including not wanting to imply any type of favoritism, being very busy, or due to site policy.

Me too!

The earlier KKI posts seem to be related to the Behavioral Psychology/ Neuropsychology Program and not the newer, PMHP/Family Traumatic Stress Program. These are separate programs, not tracks.

Edit: PMHP is one of the two tracks within the latter program.

I’m waiting on this one too!! I don’t remember seeing an update, but within AAPI I noticed that they extended the deadline to 11/16. So maybe that’s related? I think 12/15 is the posted notification date.
Has any one heard from the KKI PMHP/Family Traumatic Stress Program yet? Still waiting on this one! 🙂

I know it hasn't been posted here but does anyone know (heard from other applicants) whether Charleston Consortium has sent out any invites for the Neuropsych track? I know other tracks have been posted here and their interview days go until the end of January.

I applied for neuropsych and have yet to hear back either way. I know they do a rolling process but I'm getting anxious about this one!
