APPIC Interview Invitation Thread (2021)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
For anyone attending the open house for VA Portland (or anyone who may have insight into this particular question) - from the brochure, did you get the impression that they rank all attendees of the open house? I know rank order may change based on their rating system, but it was unclear if there will be another "cut" after the open house. Just curious, since this is the only site on my list that does not individually interview folks.

I might be getting a little ahead of myself here - but looking ahead at interviews, it is quite likely that I will have 5 interviews in one week. Is this normal?...Because I'm not entirely sure my mind can handle this.
The week before, I have a 5-hour interview and a 2-hour open house (for a different site) on the same day.
I am in the same boat. I'm just grateful that the interviews are virtual and we won't have to travel from one site to another in a super short span of time

Has anyone heard from Kennedy Krieger Institute/Johns Hopkins Center for Child and Family Traumatic Stress? Their notification date was yesterday 😬
I would email. I had one site that I did not hear from even after their notification date. And apparently, they called and I did not get their call. Thankfully I email to follow up and got an invite for interview. So i would email and ask, I don't want to miss any opportunity. 🙂 All the best.

@HopefullyOptimistic I will say that it looks like no one has heard from Kennedy one way or the other so my plan was to give them Monday as well and then reach out and the end of the day if there is still silence?!
That sounds like a good plan - I was thinking maybe they just got delayed since their application deadline was pushed to 11/16.

Some people in my cohort received mass rejection emails from UC Davis CAPS this morning 🙁

Dang! I was just accepting the fact that I was likely rejected. I have not received an invite to interview nor a rejection. Leads me to believe there is still hope...?? Thanks for sharing!

was this for the department of rehabilitation (through Staten Island University)?
Long Island Jewish/Zucker Hillside Hospital is an entirely different site with more tracks. Both are a part Northwell Health, but so are many hospitals in the region. I have not heard from Northwell Health-Staten Island University Hospital - they generally notify between 12/13 and 12/15, possibly due to their application deadline being 12/01.

Saw that Jesse brown was sending out invites but didn’t see neuropsych invites. Anybody able to confirm that they received an invite for their neuropsych track?
I've been wondering this too!
Does anyone know of any articles/videos that have compiled neuro -specific statistics? (I.e. average # of interviews, match rates, etc) 🙃
That would be amazing. I've been wishing for something like this.

I am not sure if a new thread should be started for this regarding interview questions but I am wondering if anyone has any advice about how to prepare for Neuropsych specific case vignettes and/or writing samples that you may be given on an interview? Or if you have already had interviews with Neuropsych vignettes/samples, what was asked of you?

I also would love to get input for forensic and correctional facility interview sites[emoji120]

I did a vignette for a forensic site already, I prepared by reviewing diagnostic criteria, principles of competency/risk/malingering, MMPI validity scales and code types, and EBPs for serious mental illness. I also reviewed the site’s handbook to get an idea for what types of therapeutic approaches they prefer.

Me too. Very grateful to have the interviews and not have to travel, but this seems exhausting! My current plans for managing are: cancel everything I need to cancel in advance of that week, have meals prepped/assigned to partner, make no plans for the weekends on both ends, plan outfits in advance as if I am traveling and would be forced to, and plan to prep for each specific interview (e.g. re-read cover letters and brochure) the morning of so I don't get them too scrambled. It would be great to hear others' tips for making back-to-back interviews as successful as possible!

I got a whole string of rejections before interviews came in. I know it’s scary but it definitely happens that way. Hugs to you!! Rooting for those invites to start coming your way soon!
thank you <3 I completed these applications only a few weeks after giving birth to my first child because i was so determined to continue moving forward with my career, and I know I did a good job despite the lack of sleep! praying for the same sort of response you got...

Wow! SUPER helpful! Thank you so so much[emoji4]

Kudos to you for managing this process with a newborn ❤️

I second all of this. Even though I had a week full of interviews this past week and did...none of these things 😉 I actually prepared quite a bit for my very first interview and none for the rest, even though my top choices came later in the week. Overall interviews have felt more conversational and to a large extent repetitive. My candid answers have been much better than rehearsed, scripted answers.

You’re a rockstar! Congratulations and welcome to your sweet babe! 💕

Way to go mama! From another mama who had kids in grad school, I know how much of an adjustment those first few weeks are. Praying that you get good news soon! I also had a bunch of rejections before my first interview offer. It's not too late by any means.

Happy interview season fam! Sending everyone positive energy.

Anyone hear from Friends Hospital in Philly? They have yesterday listed as their notification date but since they extended their deadline I assume they’ll take a bit longer. Wanted to see if anyone has info. Thanks in advance!
I didn’t hear from them either. I applied to child track. Not expecting a good response though. Instead of putting “i would like to be considered for the Child Track”, I wrote “I would like to be considered for the Behavioral Health Rotation”. 😖

Wow, being a parent of a newborn and still pushing through with applications is no joke! I admire your perseverance and I hope you get lots of invitations coming your way!

For those that have attended an optional virtual open house that doesn’t take place same day as interview, did you “go” in full interview attire?
Yes Montefiore had an open day before the interview invitations. I dressed a little more colorfully than I would have for interview but, I was dressed. Everyone else was in suit jackets too.

I’m waiting on Woodhull too. Not a word from them. I heard that they are typically a little disorganized but I think at this point I’m waiting for a rejection.
I wouldn't lose hope! I didn't apply there but I just know that in general the NYC sites tend to notify later so maybe they haven't told anyone anything yet!

Anyone hear from the Albert Einstein/Montefiore Combined Specialization? I've seen some for adult and some for child on here.

I bow down. I could not have done that. And sites should bow down too. I wish there was a way to communicate stuff like this to sites. Covid is tough, creating a human is harder.

Rejection 9:58 CST - UNC-SOM. Mass email, not track-specific. Knew this one was coming, just wasn't sure when! Not sweating it 🙂
Just got this too. This was one of my favorite sites but I have to say this may have been the least thoughtful rejection email I have received. (And I received plenty...😉) Ah well - takes the edge off a bit I guess.
