What are the consequences for submitting the AACOMAS application on the Application's opening date (May 4th?) vs. submitting it May 25th~30th ish?

I have most of my material ready but I am also working on my AMCAS application and there's alot more to do material-wise than I had initially expected... Would this 2~3 week later submission be fatal for my application?

Hey, I've been through this process twice (I applied to both MD and DO med schools twice, at the end of my second cycle now). My two cents: I submitted both AMCAS and AACOMAS within the first week that we were allowed to submit them, which was June 1st or afterwards.

Both cycles, my applications were verified within 7-10 days of submission. I also had all my transcripts in during that first week. So...that all worked out well for me as in I was ready to submit my verified applications to the med schools of my choosing as soon as I received word that everything was verified. You need every edge that you can get. I would recommend getting the AMCAS and AACOMAS in ASAP, and as close to June 1 or that first week-- if only for peace of mind.

And this also means you COULD get secondaries sooner. And it means you CAN be considered complete sooner, provided your MCAT score is all sent in and ready to go. Annnnd you CAN be considered for interviews, sooner--always a good thing! Schools have their own processes and the possible advantages of being early have to be weighed by your own levels of risk vs reward--and how confident you are in your completed AMCAS/AACOMAS...how ready you feel for everything to be verified and locked in.

Everyone you talk to is going to have their own approach to applying, and this is just what worked for me. Best of luck! Get ready to hang on to your hat, it's gonna be a wild ride!🙂

And to answer your question, I doubt it'll be fatal. It'll just delay the submission cascade mentioned above by however long you delay, I'm thinking...and that could impact things but it's all about levels of risk and if you're okay with delaying a bit.

Ooooh, Okay so by pressing the "Submit application" button in the AACOMAS application today, I am simply getting it submitted for "verification" which takes several weeks? And the *actual* application submission to each school occurs following June 1st?

I'm a bit confused because I was not sure I was going to apply to DO until the last month, and I was only really familiar with the AMCAS process only, where applicants prepare their applications after it opens May 1st all throughout May and submit them the first week of June.

Correct! AMCAS and AACOMAS work the same way:

--fill out everything in applications during month of May (AACOMAS has an earlier date so keep that in mind!)
--send in official transcripts in May
--submit AMCAS anytime After June 1
--submit AACOMAS anytime after May 4
--TRY to get them within that first week!
--await verification email that everything is set and ready to go
*with AACOMAS keep checking to see if verified (they don't let you know, you have to keep checking the status)*
--make sure letters of rec are submitted, too!
--after you're verified, submit anytime thereafter to med schools of your choosing-selected within AMCAS and AACOMAS, in the final section
--AMCAS releases applications to med schools (so they can see you've applied to their school) starting June 30
--AACOMAS verified applications are available to DO schools immediately
--breathe!! You're done with a huge part of the process

i edited my posts, as my memory was slightly incorrect. Please see my changes! I verified everything with AMCAS and AACOMAS websites and...regarding verification waiting time...

"The AMCAS Verification process starts when your application has been submitted and your official transcripts have arrived at AMCAS. Once all your materials have been received, your application joins the verification queue. Processing can take up to 6 weeks from the time that your application and all required official transcripts are received."

AACOMAS is a little different and has slightly different dates of submission. But the verification process can still take awhile. And according to their FAQ's, you have to monitor the application status yourself. They don't notify you that it's verified, they only contact you if there's coursework missing or if something's entered wrong. For more info here, check out their FAQ's, lots of good answers in there.

You'll still be considered an early submission as the application cycle for DO schools extends later than MD schools.
