I'm a post-bacc and will be applying to dental school this coming summer/fall. However, I'm still a bit hazy on what the time-table is for the application process. When is the earliest you can begin applying, and when is it considered "late" to be applying?

The reason I ask is because I'm applying to a summer dental enrichment program that lasts 8 weeks and doesn't finish until late July. Ideally I'd like to apply to dental school after I attend this summer program so that I'll have a better idea if dentistry is truly for me, and also the summer program will look good on my application as demonstrated interest in dentistry. If I attend this summer program, take my DAT in mid-August, and submit to AADSAS in early September, will I be behind in the application process and significantly hindering my chances of being accepted since I wasn't an early-bird in the application process?

I'm new to this so please excuse my ignorance regarding the application process. 😳

early september is still alright..no need to panic. many ppl submit from september onwards and make it. altho be careful with schools that have earlier deadlines..most privates have march 1st deadlines so you should be alright there.

I would submit you application as soon as possible, but include that you are going to be doing this program in your application. Once it is done, sent the schools you a letter explaining you experiences to the school to which have applied.

What program is this?

I think the most critical thing besides your GPA and DAT score is how early that you apply. I'm sure where ever you do your summer program, you will still have time to do your application. If you apply in September, schools will receive your application almost a month later which is october, takes another month to review and you won't know your status until like january. People say it's fine applying in september but if you want to save some stress and get some early interviews while there are still open spots in schools, I suggest you apply early, like early June since the earliest date you can apply is June 1st. Good luck.

i would def apply by mid-august. if you wait into september your application won't be sent to schools until november 1st, so you miss the december 1st round pool. but if you send it by say august 10th then you have a good chance of hearing by end of september and interviewing early 🙂

Yes, you should apply early (in August), and whatever you will learn in the enrichment program you can convey it to the adcoms during your interviews. Don't waste valuable time by applying late because the application processing time will get longer during 'rush period' (end-Aug to end-September)

Apply as close to June as you can. I applied in august. Started hearing back from schools in october. Was interviewing in NOV and DEC which means I was missing school during mid-terms and finals 😱 . Those that applied early interviewed in around august and september (the beginning of the semester) and I think it was much easier for them.

At each interview I was at, I had at least one person from the school say, "You have a great application, but why didn't you apply earlier? You would have had a better chance." I still haven't been accepted anywhere. Apply early if you can, but if you can't it won't kill you.

You can always apply before you take you DAT too. ADA is much faster about sending scores to schools than AADSAS is about your app. I applied in mid July and took my DAT in August. My DAT scores arrived at the schools before my application.

i submitted my whole application on june 18th 2014 and im taking my dat in august would i be considered late? or would my scores be uploaded around the same time as my application for reaching the dental schools???

Dug up a 10 year old thread to ask a question that has been answered at least 10 times in the last couple weeks... well done! Do a quick search. You will not be reviewed until your DAT scores are received. You are not early, you are not too late, you are about in the middle.

You should start telling everyone that they're way too late lol.
