Do people apply to NYU just in case they don't get in anywhere else? They have so many seats but relatively low GPAs. No disrespect to those that attend NYU. From what I've read, it seems like they take advantage of your dreams and charge you a lot for little education.

(Not saying I will for sure get in, but if I don't get in anywhere else, then I guess I'll go to NYU if accepted. Not trying to do a gap year and reapply.)

That was a mistake I made when I applied. I had okay stats (3.6 oGPA, 3.5 sGPA, 24 DAT) and I added them to my list a couple weeks after my app submission because I got paranoid and wanted to be sure that I got in somewhere.

Rejected without interview. I'm inclined to think that because I come from a state with a state school, that they didn't want to waste an interview spot on someone that most likely will their state school. Total speculation though.

So in hindsight, you wouldn't have applied there? I also have a state school, but there's never a guarantee I'll get in there.

NYU is still a great school, although it has a very high pricetag. But its definitely not a safety school, I was waitlisted with a 23 DAT and ~3.65 average and science GPA. As far as making sure you'll get into dental school, the key is to applying to a wide range of schools. There really isn't any school that is a guarantee to get in, but if you apply to a lot of schools, your chances will be higher that you'll get into one of them.

NYU is not a safety school, lol. Just cause of class size? They prob get more applications and every school combined because of huge international pull. (Canadians)

Roseman was my safe school just fyi.

Havent heard anything from my "safe schools" (NYU included if you will). Dental School cycles are such games of chance. Dont apply somewhere that you dont see yourself going because you/we have no clue what will happen. Have fun, it sucks

Folks here put way too much emphasis on pedigree. If you notice, this typically occurs in the pre-dent forums, not the dentist and resident forums. All dental schools are much more similar than they are different. The major difference between them is price, that’s all. Dental school is just a vehicle; what matters is the effort placed by the student. I’ve encountered awful, I mean absolutely awful dentists who have graduated from “prestigious” schools, and I’ve encountered incredibly impressive doctors from the “bottom of the barrel” schools who would wipe the floor with some of their colleagues.

For those of you folks who think you’ll go to NYU, USC, Tufts, or any other “safety school” and be the smartest one in the class, you’re in for quite a gut-check.

NYU is one of the few schools that rejects applicants that they feel will reject their admission offer thanks to high stats.

I wouldn't have applied if I were to do it all over again. But that's with my stats/circumstances.

You should make the judgment for yourself if NYU is worth the price tag, application fee, etc.

I was interviewed, accepted, and offered money at NYU with a highly competitive application and two state schools to my residency. Their average stats are indeed very high. If it weren't for price, I would have been more than happy to attend. They seem to have a great clinical program. They are way overpriced (part of that simply because of COL), but that doesn't make them a bottom feeder school.

Apply because you want to go there! Not because it's a safety school, there is no "safety" when applying to dental schools.

I knew a guy with a sub 3.00 GPA and applied to every single dental school in the country. He also happened to be the first person in the country to have his application into AADSAS.

Only school that he was accepted to was Case Western in Cleveland, OH.
