So..I'm getting ready for the next admissions cycle and its that time for me to apply! My eyes are going crossed just thinking of all the things that I need to do:scared:....so for all of you that have applied..in what order did you do things?

I think I may be joining you in applying for the Fall 09 semester. I definitely need to work on my PCAT score. but other than that, I am good. So I will be taking the last of my prereqs this summer. but in July i will start filling out my applications again. Then I will be taking my Pcat, then i will interview hopefully in October - December. then i will get accepted December - February. Then I will chill out till august and collect a fatter bankroll until school time. :luck:

First of all...RELAX! Ok, now that you have done that let me start first by saying that you have a little time to get this done, so don't worry! I have always been one who believed that "the early bird gets the worm" and there is definitely too much money involved in the application process to do it half-hearted.

The first thing to do now is to start working on your personal statement. In my opinion, this is one of the most important parts of your application - right up there with GPA (to an extent). But in all seriousness if it comes down between two applicants with similar stats this could be the difference of who gets accepted! So the earlier you start the better off you are! Do a few drafts (I did 4) to ensure you catch any grammatical or spelling errors, or anything that just doesn't make sense to you.

The next thing to do is to start rounding up your letters of recommendation - You probably need to start this by May 15th. Keep in mind that PharmCAS officially opens up the next admissions cycle on June 1st, so this will allow a little time for your references to write you a good LOR. I would encourage you ask your references to submit this electronically using PharmCAS to avoid any delays.

Now that your done with LOR's (which was the hardest part to me) all you have to do is get your transcripts in order. I started this on May 29th to allow a few days for my school to send them to PharmCAS. You can only start working on your planned/completed coursework at 12am June 1st when PharmCAS officially opens again. Once you enter all that info. you can officially add your personal statement, extra curricular activities, work experience etc.

You are almost done at this point (and by almost done I mean just submitting). All you have to do is wait until they calculate the GPA from your transcript and you can submit - you do not have to wait around on the LOR's to come through if they haven't already (I did because I wanted just one neat package, and your super early at this point anyway). Once you e-submit your date is locked in and mailed to the schools (usually a few weeks after).

Most schools I applied to didn't accept the supplemental apps. until after August 1st so I waited until about July 20th to work on all those. Believe me, the PharmCAS was nothing compared to some of the supplementals
in terms of how much time it took to complete! So beware, its a good idea to go ahead and download the supplementals off the schools website and work on them!

A lot of people I go to school with didn't do any of this until September at least...and you may have wonderful stats that will allow you this option too but I would suggest you get started ASAP because the competition will only increase as the months do (for rolling-admissions). Good luck and PM me for any questions! 😎

p.s. If you have not yet taken the PCAT you should take it in June if its offered...

i suggest you try to get your pharmcas application in as early as possible

also, you want to get your supplementals in ASAP as well...but don't rush these, they are crucial.

i'd say a healthy date to get your supplementals in would be between september and novemeber (get them in by september if you're applying to california schools--their deadlines are november 1st). but that's just my opinion

Well there ya go! 😀

I also plan on applying for Fall 2009! 🙂 I've already secured one letter of recommendation. I also plan on taking the June PCAT. I'm starting to work on my personal essay and letter of intent for my adviser who is writing a letter of recommendation for me. I'm also trying to keep my grades up this semester to raise my GPA a little. So much to do, so little time 🙁

Congrats on starting to prepare for admission now, starting early is important. Just to say it one more time, starting early is important.

When I applied I waited until the last minute and because of that I could not apply for early decision because I was not able to secure one of my LORs before the deadline, so I had to apply regular admission and wait months to get my acceptance.

Start writing your Personal Statement now, so you have plenty of time to revise it and have different people look at it so you get a variety of opinions. Get your LORs early if you can or at least know who you want to write them.
Another benefit of having your personal statement done early is that you can give it to the people writing your LORs, having your statement may help them write a better, more personal letter for you.

Get a feel for the schools you want to apply to now, so you can double check that you meet all the requirements and you can call and ask any questions.

I have seen a lot of threads about the money people spend on applying so if money is tight you may want to think about starting to save some money for airline tickets, hotels, supplemental application fees, deposits and whatever else may come up. You do not want to be scrambling for cash for travel costs while you are preparing for interviews.

During the admission process, SDN is great place to come to ask questions but remember you can always call the school and ask them directly. By calling the school it can help them to get to know you a little so your name pops when they see the application. Also they have the best information about their particular pharmacy program. I know some people are a little nervous about calling them but they are usually very friendly and love to help students. They definitely are not doing what they do for the fat paychecks, they want to help you.

Use the career services that your school offers, many schools have writing centers that will read over your essays, make suggestions and correct errors for FREE. Career centers will often run mock interviews for you so you can get confident before your really interviews. The interview is a very important piece of the admission cycle and even if you are confident it never hurts to run through a free mock interview. They will give you some pointers or at least tell you that you were awesome.

I know a few universities also have a professional dress discount sale in the spring before most job and grad school interviews. This is a great program where students can pick up suits and professional attire for dirt cheap. Most of the stuff is donated by alumni. Suits for men and women can get expensive so this is a good option.

Send in your transcripts early to PharmCas so you are not worrying abut the mail losing them or missing a deadline. It can be a hassle to get transcripts if you have attended multiple school, so get them early.

Another thing to look into is if you are current on all your immunizations, just something to think about, I know lots of students in my class had to get a bunch done before school started and it was a hassle for them. So never hurts to look into it now and know if you are up to date.

After your interviews, promptly write thank you letters, it is a nice touch whether it helps or not. Them seeing your name on something positive, can't hurt!

Do things one at a time. The personal statement can be daunting for some people so start it early.

Applying is a lot of work so work hard, start early and be prepared so you do not have to apply a second time!

Good luck and have fun!

Wow, this thread is really helpful. I do learn a lot from you guys. Thanks so so much. Now I know where to start (my habit is always wait for the last minute but I try not to do it this time. Well, it's hard - believe me lol).

If anyone has more things would like to share, please post. We appreciate all your words.

One more thing...Taking the PCAT in June was the smartest thing I ever did. Honestly I didn't expect a good grade and I really didn't get one...So I still had time to re-take the test in August. Even if you don't do good in August you still have October! However you must keep in mind that the August and October test scores will be updated during December when PharmCAS does the "Academic Update" (Yes, you get the pleasure of sending in a new transcript with your updated fall grades!). Just try your best to get all you can out of the June test so schools will see that first! I wish you guys the best of luck, just remember that your application is the only thing the schools see before you interview - so make it the best you can to beat the competition! SDN can help you tremendously (awesome FAQ section!). Good luck! :luck:

Thanks to the original poster for starting this thread. I am also applying for Fall'09. Let's try to keep this going as long as possible! I want to hear as much as I can from those who went through applications.

I do have a question: My top choice's deadline is November 1 of this year. So is the latest I can take the PCAT in October?

For a Nov. 1st deadline the August PCAT more than likely...It usually takes a month for PharmCAS to get the scores from your test date. Hope this helps!

How long should the personal statement be and what all should it include?

BADD281, I really appreciate the advice you're giving out to me and everyone else.

About the Academic Update...so if I take the PCAT in June and August, but wanted to take it again in October....would the schools see the October score and my fall grades before they decide to accept me or not?

I also saw that you will be attending Wingate. I live in NC, so that's one of the schools I'm applying to. Good luck!

Thanks! I'm really excited about it!

And no problem about the info! I know how I felt this time last year. 😉

Ok and as far as the academic update is concerned.. I'll start with this:

If you are taking the PCAT for the first time and you chose to do the June test date it will take about a month for PharmCAS to receive the scores, only then would I e-submit the PharmCAS application. Even if your scores aren't the best its better to have a somewhat complete application and you can even put in your "test" section that you are planning to re-take it again in August or October.

Now as far as the August and October tests go these will be sent during your "Academic Update" around mid to late December. Basically it works like this, PharmCAS sends your schools an initial packet after you e-submit in the summer. Then you send your new transcripts from the fall 08' in December and they send your schools yet another packet - in this packet will be your latest grades and if you chose to re-take the PCAT once or twice more, the updated test scores.

If you are applying to schools with rolling admissions you might get an interview offer/acceptance before the academic update! (If you have pretty good stats this is more likely to happen) - regardless you still have to do the academic update. I know this is a lot to digest but I simply made out a checklist and methodically crossed off everything I have done and looked ahead at what I needed to do...this helps!

Again, I am really happy to help all of you who need it! Feel free to PM me even. I hope this last post wasn't confusing... 😳

So what if you are taking summer classes that have grades officially posted early August? Will summer grades have to wait until academic update in December also? Or should I just submit everything all together at the same time like send first transcripts to pharmcas after summer grades, not one during the summer then one after?

Hope that wasn't too confusing.

Since PharmCAS opens in June, and PharmCAS says "To make sure your official transcript is handled properly by PharmCAS, you should print the PharmCAS official transcript request form from the Colleges Attended section of your application and give that to your Registrar's Office to be included with your transcript when it is mailed to PharmCAS", and classes end 3 weeks before that, how would you print out the PharmCAS official transcript request form and give it to the registrar's office if you're not going to be on campus come June when PharmCAS opens?

I plan on applying to Pharm this year also. If pharmcas open on June 1. When should we contact our school to send in transcript ? I mean after Pharmcas open or before June 1 ?
Thank

guess no one knows? >.>

You could always send your transcript request along with the PharmCAS form via mail or drop it off at your college/university. Essentially, you can't do anything until PharmCAS opens on June 1st.

If you think your summer grades will significantly boost your cGPA and/or sGPA, then wait to e-submit your application so PharmCAS would receive the most up-to-date grades. If it doesn't significantly boost your GPA, I'd highly recommend you e-submit your app ASAP, as long as you're happy with it and it's as error-free as possible.

Stay organized, gather all your college/university transcripts you've attended together prior to June 1st so you can start inputting your courses/grades as soon as the window opens. That's the 2nd most time-consuming part of the entire app. The #1 was my PharmCAS essay, I wanted it to be purrrrfeeccct. 🙂

Is there an advantage to applying early if there isn't rolling admission?

Is there an advantage to applying early if there isn't rolling admission?

The advantages are not as great, however, my personal experience with this issue is a little different. One of the four schools I applied to was non-rolling, the rest were rolling. I submitted my application in November, PharmCAS sent it to my schools in December. The deadline for the non-rolling school was Feb 1st. I was an out-of-state applicant for that school. Late December, I got my interview invite for a late January date, and by the first few days of February I knew I was in. They turned out to be semi-rolling in terms of out of state students, so I had a pretty good advantage by applying early there. You certainly don't lose anything by applying to all your schools early, it gets it off your chest at any rate.
