applying for EM and IM at the same hospital?

I am applying in Anesthesiology and IM as a backup. I am wondering what peoples feeling is about applying to categorical IM programs at the same places I applied to Anesthesiology? I know its okay to apply to prelims, but I'm feeling torn about cat. And I'm getting really different opinions on this too.

Please advise....
