I'm interested in applying for the HPSP however, I won't be ready to apply for it this year. I always thought I could just apply for the 3 year scholarship when I'm a D1. Can I do that?

Yes. Once you begin dental school, the 3-year is available for you. The dentist that interviewed me for my HPSP said he had just interviewed a D1 for a 3 year.

Yes, if that is your dream then go for it. I have a friend who is doing exactly that and just finished his application for the 3-year HPSP.
Be sure to speak with a recruiter ASAP before or when you start dental school. The application can take a while due to many factors (transcripts, signing documents, MEPS, etc.) and I believe the deadline is usually in late November or early December for the Army.

It's extremely competitive because you're competing against all the people who were alternates for the 4-year, plus all the new 1st years that decided they want to do it.
The earlier you can get started, the better. Since it sounds like you haven't started school yet, you have time. Good luck.
