Applying once or twice?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
big mistake to plan on getting rejected the first time around.

It’s expensive, it takes time and energy, requires planning. Do it once and do it right.

Anyway, most places view re-applicants with a skewed lens of “no one wanted them the first time around”
I wanr to go to ucla and i want to have the best possible chance of being accepted

That seems to apply only to top candidates. And I 've seen plenty of SDN posts from tip candidates who applied late once cycle, had to reapply apply, and got in with an early app in round #2. But with 140+ MD schools in the US, each school will view reapplicants differently.

The key thing people will look for is "how did s/he improve?"

ALL applicants should prepare for not getting accepted and be working on improving their app, until they have that accept letter in thier Inbox.

Have UCLA caliber stats and live in CA, for starters.

Why T20s I'm curious? Medical school is difficult enough to get into on its own. Have everything fall into place with a MCAT score in hand before gunning for a T20

I have looked up in advance the schools and pictures of what the campus looks like. I got the med school infornation from Wikipedia then looked them up by state. I also prefer the ones in nyu because i have been to ny multiple times in the past to visit family and really like it. Never knew that those schools were top 20 until I started to look up ranking lol. Preference columbia because of the sky blue color and gowns lol.

The odds of your getting into UCLA as an OOSer are about 0.5%

Do you have NYU calibre stats? Median for UCLA is 517 MCAT and 3.85 GPA; it's higher for NYU, and even harder now given the free tuition.

Building appearance doesn't matter. This is an inflated buyer's market and we are the houses.

Getting into any US med school is a privilege. We can land in cold nowheresville America for four years and still be better off than most applicants.

Medical school admissions is a different game than college admissions. We are competing against the best of the best. Stay on SDN and I'm sure your medical admissions journey will be a lot smoother. Been here since my Freshman year and I am very grateful for having joined this site and learning the cold realities about med school admissions.

Many med schools are not on the same campus as their universities.

Anyway, don’t get too focused on any particular US med school. Getting into any of the them is an honor, privilege, and accomplishment.

Obviously not but i dont look at like (eeyore voice) " oh, well i guess I should just remain average". With a little hard work and faith, anyone can make their dreams come true

Getting into any medical school in the United States is already above average. 60% of applicants don't get in at all, and most people who do only get into one school. If you go to Cornfield State School of Osteopathic Medicine you are already an incredibly successful applicant and better off than the majority of pre-meds, even if you didn't go to Columbia. And the "dream" should be becoming a doctor, not going to a specific school because you think the building looks cool and you like the school color.

Edit: Don't mean to be rude, but being realistic about the process will give you the best chance of becoming a doctor.

Edit again: To answer your original question...you should make sure your application is strong enough to get in the first time around. If you don't get in and you still want to be a doctor, by all means, reapply, but reapplicants are no more attractive candidates than first-time applicants. It doesn't "help" your application to reapply. You will have several thousand dollars and a year of your time down the drain if you don't wait until you're ready for your first application cycle.
tbh sorry man. I just get a little carried away sometimes and right now i am facing negative talk from my parents that i wont make it. So i get a little upset when people tell me i can't make it. I have always valued all medical schools equally and sometimes dont but i am working on it. You are right, it doesnt matter if its md or do i would still be honored

What does your hair color (strawberry blonde) and being diabetic have to do with this conversation?

OP if you apply once and you get accepted, you will be on your way. As you learn the process and become comfortable with it you find out what you need to have a successful
application. Do not plan on applying twice. Plan to apply one time with the best possible application.
What are your GPAs? How are you doing on your ECs? There is so much you have to do before you apply. Stop looking at pictures and school colors and start reading the forums. Find out what other pre med students are doing to get ready for applying. And then there is always the MCAT but you are years away from that jump!

Lol at the " stop looking at school pictures and colors". My gpa is 3.4( not where i want it to be) and i have no extra curiculars yet but I got offered to shadow a pulmonary surgeon my parents know and my family medicine doctor. I am also a current cna student. I should jave started my sophmore year this semester but im not a current student because i am having financial issues.

Some people don’t decide until after college, even years after. So you aren’t late at all. Just keep working at it and see what happens. Good Luck!

I was asking if it is okay to apply twice. How is that question unrealistic and I am seriois about my story. I am enrolled in a private cna course and not college. My parents had to get a loan to sort of help me out which i have to pay them back. Minority problems

Do you know for NYU med the average GPA/MCAT are 3.9 and 521? If you look for tuition-free, Cleveland Clinic (not far from Chicago) has that too...only IF you could get accepted there. Unless your current GPA is near 4.0 (which is not), forget about any top med schools. And you're in community college, which means you haven't proved you can handle rigorous university-level science courses yet. Being realistic is the key, fantasy only exists in dream.
