Applying only to DO schools?

I know that I am interested in family medicine and would love to have the skill of OMM when I start my practice. I totally agree with osteopathic principles. I am thinking about only applying to osteopathic medical schools. What are anyone's thoughts about this? I know ultimately I can do whatever I want but I really would like to consider other views.

If you are really passionate about osteopathic medicine and family medicine, then I see no problem in only applying to osteopathic medical schools.

But search up the cons of USDOs and be informed before you make this decision.

I think this is also a good idea. I also feel that somehow I may become interested in another specialty at sometime and an MD would allow more flexibility if the specialty is more competitive. I would probably attend an in-state MD school, like the Medical University of South Carolina, if I did that. Thanks for the advice.

That's a big component of the situation, true. Another big view is the fact that as a MD you could go to a top tier FM residency and then do significantly more economically including getting partnerships with more lucrative group practices or etc.

100% concur. I've had plenty of students who could have easily gotten into an MD school (Northwestern, for one), but chose DO specifically for the reasons OP states.

applying to medical school is a crap shoot. apply to both MD and DO. make the decision when the time comes.

I know the consensus on here is to go MD at all costs (except for the Caribbean), but I didn't really like most of the allopathic schools I had a chance at getting into for various reasons. Moving out of Michigan was a priority and my options would have been pretty limited there in the allopathic route, too. I applied to like 4 MD schools and only submitted the secondary for one, then chose an osteopathic school. Some people do have legitimate reasons for focusing mostly or entirely on DO aside from having stats that automatically rule out MD schools.
