I just have a couple of questions. I will be completing my B.S in bio this year. I have a 3.2/3.3 cum gpa. I transfered from a community college to a university and my current gpa at the university is a 3.5. First two years were rough, working 40hrs a week in the pharmacy and going to school full time but I learned better time management when I got to the university. My extracurriculars, volunteer work, and pharmacy experience are all in accordance. I'm just worried about this low gpa. And I feel ultimately my pcat score will decide where I will go.

1) What I want to know is if pharm schools will take my gpa at the university into consideration when they are reviewing my application?

2) I'm taking the pcat in august and I wanted to know should I wait to my submit pharmcas application until I get my scores
since my gpa is on the low side or should I submit with out them?

1) From my understanding, pharmacy schools do distinguish between community college and universities, meaning that when they take a look at your transcripts, they will look more favorably upon having a good science GPA at the university vs. having that same GPA at a community college. That's good news for you as long as you keep that 3.5 going.

I've also heard that is important that the schools see that you can do well while taking 15-18 hours per semester. That might be impossible with your work schedule, so my advice is to simply do well in your courses and use your personal statement to explain that you work full time and can't be a full time student. They will understand and admire your determination.

2) I don't know if this is a universal thing, but the schools I'm applying to will not consider my application until my PCAT scores are sent to PharmCAS. This means I can go ahead and send in the application, have my GPA calculated and be ready to go. But until the PCAT scores and LORs are received, no one will take a look at the application.

If you have your PCAT CID and you feel that your application is ready to go, other than the lack of PCAT scores, then I see no problem with going ahead with the submission. Just make sure you put your PCAT CID down before you submit PharmCAS.

I'm an applicant like you and this is just my observation from being pre-pharm for quite a long time. Other people might have different opinions, especially about #1.

Your GPA isn't that low. Where are you applying?

Yes, both because it is at a university rather than a CC and because it is your most recent coursework. Both are bonuses in your favor. Going the other way (from Uni to CC, or from high GPA to low) would hurt you.

2) I'm taking the pcat in august and I wanted to know should I wait to my submit pharmcas application until I get my scores since my gpa is on the low side

If it's done, you can submit it whenever. I would submit after you take the PCAT so your GPA is calculated by the time the scores arrive.

I'm applying to:

Nova
PBA
Lecom Bradenton
UF
FAMU
UGA
Auburn
University of Texas

What were your stats when you applied?

I'm guessing you're a Florida resident. I'd recommend checking out some private schools around the country.

Why UT?

Yes I am...I have family around that area in Texas so it's a free place to stay and free food!

That's funny. I'm a FL resident and I'm from Austin, originally. I don't think I'm applying there because the out of state acceptance is extremely low. Look at the statistics on their website. That may not sound like a good attitude, but I'm being realistic. I wouldn't be competitive enough for that.

Yea getting accepted as an out of state to Texas public schools is difficult.
Here are the statistics

I went to UT for undergrad, was interviewed in the first group, and was strung along til May when they finally sent me my rejection letter.

Yea you guys are right the out of state percentage is extremely low (9%)...i'll reconsider my options

Thanks!

does anyone know if FAMU accepts foreign citizens who attended an accredited university in the US. i called the admissions and everyone there seems to give different answers. a reply will be appreciated.

You're good to go, it'll still be a struggle, but what isn't these days. Although most people will understand that working 40 hours a week and being a full time student is difficult, don't outright blame the 40 hours a week as an excuse for doing poorly...the right wording will make you look much better
