I'm looking for anyone else who has interviewed this year and would like to exchange impressions. Also, if anyone out there has impressions of the NYC programs I'd like to hear them, especially people at the dental schools now. Thanks.

send me an email at [email protected]

I have gone for all my interviews this year, I would be happy to hear your thoughts and I will give u mine.

Sorry for the confusion, I'm looking for omf residency apps./info. Thanks

If you are talking about OMFS programs in NYC, I spent 3 weeks this past summer at Bellevue/NYUCD's 6-year OMFS-MD program.

I had a blast-- I attended all the seminars, interdisciplinary case presentations and grand rounds with the OMFS residents, scrubbed into the OR to assist, and did plenty of clinical stuff too.

The program director, Dr. Vasiliki Karlis, is very approachable and she goes out of her way to show the residents how to do stuff. Dr. Robert Glickman, the department chair at NYUCD, is also very personable and helpful.

All in all, the Bellevue/NYUCD OMFS program is AWESOME. Unfortunately, I'm a bit old to go OMFS, but that's the program I would go to if I could.

Thanks for the reply, I have an interview there in Dec. A few questions for you. In the OR, how "top-heavy" is it? How is the case loads? How is the ENT/plastics relation, and did the residents seem happy?

Hi,

On the occasions I scrubbed into the OR to assist, it wasn't very top-heavy... Every time I was there, there was just one OMFS attending. There are usually a few other OMFS residents also there to assist, observe and learn, occasionally residents from other programs (such as peds and AEGD), plus externs (dental students like me).

The OMFS program has a very good relationship with the other disciplines. The OMFS residents attend an interdisciplinary case conference every week next door at the NYU Med School with the various other departments (ENT, plastic, general surgery, etc.) and share information. They also send consults back and forth. These guys are on a first-name basis.

Case loads are pretty heavy-- It's New York City after all. 😀 In the clinics, two residents might have to clear 50+ patients a day-- including patients under sedation. Lots of OR stuff too-- While I was there, I saw Dentoalveolar, recon, orthognathic, emergency, radical resections, etc. Pace is pretty hectic-- They start 7AM in the morning and finish up after 6PM most of the time.

All the residents tell me that Bellevue is the place to be though because you see so much, and the faculty is top-notch too. After seeing them in action for 3 weeks, I believe it.

Good luck on your interview there in December! Tough program to get into.

Thanks again for the response. Sounds like a solid program. I just got back from my third interview. Again, I put-out the call, if anyone wants to compare notes please post on this link. Is anyone going to Emory?
