Hi,
On the occasions I scrubbed into the OR to assist, it wasn't very top-heavy... Every time I was there, there was just one OMFS attending. There are usually a few other OMFS residents also there to assist, observe and learn, occasionally residents from other programs (such as peds and AEGD), plus externs (dental students like me).
The OMFS program has a very good relationship with the other disciplines. The OMFS residents attend an interdisciplinary case conference every week next door at the NYU Med School with the various other departments (ENT, plastic, general surgery, etc.) and share information. They also send consults back and forth. These guys are on a first-name basis.
Case loads are pretty heavy-- It's New York City after all. 😀 In the clinics, two residents might have to clear 50+ patients a day-- including patients under sedation. Lots of OR stuff too-- While I was there, I saw Dentoalveolar, recon, orthognathic, emergency, radical resections, etc. Pace is pretty hectic-- They start 7AM in the morning and finish up after 6PM most of the time.
All the residents tell me that Bellevue is the place to be though because you see so much, and the faculty is top-notch too. After seeing them in action for 3 weeks, I believe it.
Good luck on your interview there in December! Tough program to get into.
