Hey, I'm new here, so forgive me if this question has been asked.

I'm trying to decide whether to apply to Edinburgh, knowing that I would eventually be living and working in the United States. Someone told me I would have to redo 2 years of vet school in the U.S. in order to be able to work as a vet here.

Does anyone know if this is true?

Thanks!

That, I am fairly positive is not correct information. The University of Edinburgh (Royal Dick school of vet) is AVMA accredited which means that once you complete their course, and if you still want to go back to the US and practice, you just need to complete the NAVLE (north american vet licensing exam) like every person who graduating in the US schools and you can work in the US as a vet no extra schooling required.

Your friend/friends might be thinking of the Caribbean schools which are not fully accredited in the US yet and most of them let you do your final clinical year at one of the US vet schools that they have arrangements with. (keeping in mind this year is part of their 4 year program, not extra)

Nexx is correct. There are 4 schools in the UK/Ireland that are AVMA accredited by the US (Edinburgh, Glasgow, RVC, and Dublin). Some programs are 4 years or 5, but at the end, you simply take the NAVLE like the US students. There are no equivalency exams. You graduate from these schools being licensed to practice in the UK, Europe, and the US.

If you have any more questions about UK schools feel free to ask! I start Glasgow in a month!! Oh, and I know Hopefulvet21 is somewhere around here, and she knows about Edinburgh, as she starts there this fall as well 🙂

Edinburgh is an excellent school! You do not have to take any extra exams or redo years if you come here, as stated above. It is on equal footing with any US school. You should apply, Edinburgh is AWESOME so far! I am loving the city and people!

Thanks guys! I studied abroad at Edinburgh during my junior year and absolutely loved the school and city. The fear that I'd have to redo vet school when I returned to the U.S was the only thing stopping me from applying.

also have a look a RVC. I'll start there end of next month, so I'll be able to comment on the experience right in time for the VMCAS deadline. 🙂

that said, the school has a stellar reputation for both academic excellence and administrative headache. i'm finding out quite a bit about both.

I'm looking into RVC right now actually. Looks great!

ShortnSweet, I PMd you about Glasgow.
