VA resident. 3.5 cGPA and 3.4 sGPA. 508 (126/128/126/128) MCAT. African-American Female. Non-traditional.

Lots of clinical experience volunteering/working in clinics, hospitals, and as an EMT-B. Very big on community service (including non-clinical) and working with underserved communities and have shown that in my application. I don't have any formal shadowing but I am hoping that won't be a deal breaker because I work so closely with physicians every day.

There is no way I can afford (time or money-wise) to apply to the 10 to 20 schools people suggest, so I only want to apply to schools in my area that I know that I would want to go to. So I will only be applying to 4-5 schools and I will go the broad route next year and apply to more MD and include DO if I do not get accepted (hopefully this won't be the case!).

The schools I am applying to are below:
Howard
George Washington
EVMS
Georgetown
VCU (maybe)

What are my chances? Any suggestions?

Why not just save the money for the four schools and use it for the next cycle so you can send your best app all together

If you don't get into those schools you'll be labeled a re-applicant, and have to deal with that stigma. With your stats you're pretty competitive for a lot of med schools in your area, so I suggest either saving up for next year or seeing if you qualify for application assistance.

Would I be considered a re-applicant for DO as well, if I only apply MD this cycle? I can always add more schools as money permits later down the line. Unfortunately, my dad makes too much money so assistance is out of the question.

Surely you can come up with enough money to apply to at least 10 schools. Borrow it, put it on a CC. It's not like it's THAT much money. If you would be able to save up more money to apply to more schools this year, then you could just as easily pay back the money you borrow or put on a CC this year.

With your stats and URM status, you should be able to garner an acceptance...but don't cut yourself short by applying to only 4-5 schools. You need to have a little bit wider net to insure success.

You'll be fine just make sure you write really good essays for your secondaries.

You could receive interviews at the 5 schools you choose but I suggest adding a few more such as West Virginia, Morehouse, Meharry, Wake Forest.

I'd hate to see you apply and get rejected because you can definitely get in. Apply with a card and pay it off?

I am still a little hesistant to spend too much money because right now I just don't have it but I am opening up to adding more schools as I go along. Can anyone one suggests some that may be a good fit. I want to find more schools that are good for primary care and/or have a high focus with working with underserved communities. Already adding Meharry and UNC. Any other suggestions to get me up to 10?

LOL I'm not one to talk about the number of apps you should send. But I would try to increase that # of schools. You seem like a competitive applicant.

Goodluck
