Hi:

Does anyone know how difficult it is to go from a "strait" medicine internship to psych? Does it help/hinder you? Thanks.

it should not be a problem and probably will help you
most programs have some pgy2 positions exactl for the applicant
who has done a prelim or transitional year. the only thing is you should somehow get in 4 months of neurology during that first year because a lot of programs don't really have a way for you to do those 4 months if you're starting as pgy2
you need those 4 months for board certificaton in psych

Hi:

Thanks for your reply. I'm in a "strait" medicine program so 4 months of neuro is impossible - but from some research it seems you just end up doing it in your 4th year if not along the way. Are there any good sites out there for psychiatry residents etc. Thanks.

The American Board of Psych and Neurology only requires 2 months of Neurology, NOT 4 MONTHS, for certification in Psych.. You can check out their website at
www.abpn.com

Here is also a link to the psych residency curriculum at Northwestern University.

If you scroll down to the PGY1 curriculum, it gives some deals about the required 2 months of Neurology!

Here is also the link to the psych curriculum at Mt. Sinai in NYC. Please note the required 2 months only of Neurology.

I hope this helps clear up the Neurolgy requirements for Board Cert. in Psychiatry.

Good luck
