PGY-1 resident here.

I am currently interested in both ID and ICU. I cannot really commit to one at the moment, but I really would be happy with either of these areas.

I was wondering if there is anyone who applied to two different PGY-2 specialties and matched

What are your thoughts about this?

If you could customize an ICU residency to include a stewardship heavy component then you would get the best of both worlds? I know an ID residency goes beyond that but just my thoughts.

Sort of how you have Emergency medicine residency years where half of it is spent in an ICU for example (and vice-versa).

When I was applying there were only 10-12 EM PGY2s. So I applied (and interviewed) at 80% EM and 20% critical care that had a strong EM component.

Matched EM. Really liked the critical care programs too.

I did this. ID and Peds. I ended up doing my PGY2 in ID and after being a specialist for 8 yrs, I went into Peds.

These two are related enough that I do not think it would raise red flags, you just might want to be careful if applying to both at the same institution. I have heard of programs seeing that people applied to both their Ambulatory Care and Critical Care programs. That might show they are just interested in "getting a residency" without knowing what they really want.
