Has anyone ever heard of someone attempting to apply to allopathic US schools while attending med school in the Caribbean. The reason why I ask, is because I'm kinda stuck deciding whether or not I want to decline my Fall 2006 Caribbean acceptance, and work for a year while applying to US schools.

I've taken the MCATs 3x with a 22 (5v,9b,8p), 25 (6v,9b,10p), and 28 (8v,9b,11p). My GPA is ~ 3.4.

My biggest fear is that I would end up wasting a year, if I don't go Caribbean and don't get accepted in US MD program. I didn't apply last year because I really didn't have a competitive MCAT. Now that I scored a 28, I'm curious to know just how competitive I am...

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance...

Hey there,

I am in the EXACT situation as you are in... i just took the April 06 mcat second time and got a 27Q. I made a tough decision but decided to stay in the US and drop my acceptance in the caribbean. Right now, i am applying to a million schools here and planning things to do for the year. I love the job i have right now and trying to find a way to stay in it. Also hoping to volunteer in various things. It's a risk, but better to play all of your cards than to look back on your experience and think, "why didn't i try?".

I don't think you can apply as a "normal student" if you are going to school in the caribbean. I believe you will apply as a transfer student.

harder! most schools don't accept transfers unless you have some compelling reason, like my husband lives in X and i would really love to live in the same city as him, etc.

You could still make it into a US Allopathic or Osteopathic medical school with a 28 and 3.4 GPA. It will depend on the rest of your application. You don't want to goto the carribean unless it's the only way you can become a physician. Have you considered a Post Bacc program or year of classes to boost your GPA?
