So what is the appropriate attire for a night of trauma surgery as a student? I'm supposed to shadow a trauma surgeon tonight and am not really sure what to wear. She is suggesting I stay the night and try being "on call", so I can't see the utility of wearing "professional" attire (dress shoes, pants, and shirt). I'm hoping to wear some comfy runners especially if I might end up standing through a surgery.

Scrubs. Super comfy shoes. Hoodie/fleece if you tend to get cold easily (hospital call rooms are notoriously freezin).

Agreed + $10 for the caf.

Thanks. I brought my runners and they are good for all the standing 🙂

Got to see two chest tubes so far and got to poke my finger in on one of them. Fingers crossed for another pneumothorax - the docs said the next one's mine!

Wear what the trauma surgeon wears. I wouldn't wear any shoes with laces because body fluids tend to go to the floor. I stopped wearing laced shoes as a first year medical student when we did rotations in the Emergency Department. Believe me, you don't want "patient juice" on your shoe laces.

Scrubs dude....that's surgery. Def. wear any comfortable shoes, and you can get those little shoe covers for them too, probably from the locker room.

I usually wear a tuxedo with a top hat. Sometimes I throw in a monocle if i'm feeling fancy.

Smart pants if you a guy. A pleated skirt if you are a girl.

What ever you wear, make sure the attendings can see your thong when you bend over to pick stuff up.
