APS/SPR research or extramural electives

I have the opportunity to do pediatric clinical research through an APS/SPR award during my fourth year. However, if I do this it might take away time from doing extramural electives in peds programs I am interested in. I already have some basic research experience and a non-first author paper so I don't know what's going to help me more to get into peds programs mostly in NYC, to accept the APS/SPR award or to do more extramural electives? Anyone have any advice.

I can't speak to any specific programs. In general, however, any external funding looks good as it implies a competitive funding process. This is helpful throughout the residency/fellowship application process. So, unless there is something in particular you want to do at another place clinically, if you like and want to do the research, and it was funded in a competitive funding process, I would go with that.

thank you for your reply...that's helpful and also thank you for your answer on having to do or not a peds sub-I on the how to become a neonatologist forum. maybe not the best place but I knew you'd read it and I'd get an answer
