I'm having a very hard time with these prompts. I'm a pretty normal person and don't really have a huge a amount of "unique" experiences. For my challenge essay, I was going to talk about growing up in a rural community then having to adjust to major city life for college and how I may be able to better relate to patients and possibly other classmates. For my diversity essay, I'm planning on talking about being an economics pre-med major and how what I learned can help me with becoming a doctor (i.e. economics often deals with developing relationships between two seemingly unrelated variables and how this way of thinking may help me to better treat a pt.).

Do you think these are poor topics to write about?

Growing up in a rural community is unique! Don't undersell yourself. Limited access to healthcare in rural areas is a big topic of concern and something you could touch upon in your essay to connect it to medicine. Diversity is a very fluid word and can be used for any kind of difference that makes you stand out: racial, economical, gender, experiences, etc., so you can write about whatever it is that you want. As long as it's developed clearly and shows a unique perspective that's beneficial to medicine, any topic can be strong.
