I am confused. I moved to US 8 years ago. Do you guys think Pakistani are considered underrepresented minorities in the field? There are not many in the field.

No, they are not. I'm pretty sure Pakistanis are classified as South Asian and that is NOT an under-represented field.

I've only heard of African Americans, Hispanics and Native Americans referred as URMs

noooooooo!!!!!well..that sucks...are you guys sure.....there are only about 5 paki dentists where i live.. (staten island, new york. popu lation- 450,000)

Okay, maybe they are not many but there's also not a high number of Pakistani citizens in the United States so it's probably accurate for the population. You are not considered a traditional "URM." If you were, then there would be a whole lot of other groups that would be considered a URM as well.

From the AAMC:

Before June 26, 2003, the AAMC used the term "underrepresented minority (URM)," which consisted of Blacks, Mexican-Americans, Native Americans (that is, American Indians, Alaska Natives, and Native Hawaiians), and mainland Puerto Ricans.

So under this definition, any type of asian is not considered URM. Even though this is the AAMC, its safe to say the same rules would apply to dental admission.

Well you found five Paki dentists in your area. I found none in my area. I searched the yellow pages within 100 miles radius.

South Asians and East Asians are infact ORM's, over represented minorities relative to their population density. There was a study about done about a year or 2 ago on college admissions; it said that a 1050 SAT Score for someone classified as an African American was equal to a 1400 SAT score for someone classified as Caucasian which was equal to a 1550 SAT score for someone classified as Asian ( Pakistani'sfall under this term). So ORMs face a pretty stiff penalty.

when you say equal, you mean equivalent in percentile relative to their race?

I mean, in terms of a standardized score, a black applicant will receive about a 350 point boost and an Asian applicant will receive about a 150 point penalty when compared to a white applicant.
