Are physicians actually smart or just hardworking?

Haha, sounds like a fair middle ground to me!
Well sort of. Critical thinking is a process made up of a set of behaviors, some of which are learned, others of which are inborn, such as curiosity, which itself can be reinforced or extinguished. Memory is based upon neuroplasticity and the connections made within the brain are made "stronger" through practice and exposure. That's why flashcards and hands on application of theory work so well in helping people learn material.

physicians are only smart if they are MD's, not DO's.

.............trololoolol 😉

I think it's a 'close to equal' amount of both (generally speaking). I aspire to become a physician that has a healthy amount of these two traits.

I have yet to meet a ******* clinician. Steve Jobs, on the others hand, had a very good prognosis of his cancer, yet decided to rely on quack nostrums to treat it, and it became terminal.

Because if doctors were as smart as the public thinks they are, why do people that go to med school dont instead build their own multimillion/billion dollar business, say like the people that founded twitter or facebook or anyone of the smaller sites that still generate millions for their founders? So to me it seems physicians are just smart enough to realize they are not actually smart enough to become millionaires using their own creativity, so they settle for medicine. I mean many internet and other self made millionaires make in a week what most doctors make in a year.

Some truth in all this?

Wish I could change my title. Maybe I should've said 'are physicians exceptionally smart or just hard-working'. And then maybe said because if they were exceptionally smart why would they spend 10 years postcollege when they could've started their own business instead and made millions that way.

I had to one time second guess a doctor at one of those walk-in clinic places when he mentioned he thought I had a "bacterial infection...but a bacterial infection can't be helped by antibiotics..."

After questioning him he kinda stared at me for a few seconds and we both pretended he meant to say viral...

Dude. People have their reasons. Sorry you don't seem to find someone spending 10 years in med school worthwhile but that's your opinion. Have you ever heard of people doing what they love?

Why are you even on this website?

You make it sound so easy. There's plenty of "exceptionally smart" people that wouldn't know how to make millions running a business.

I wanna be a hc provider. I'm partly playing devils advocate here, obviously maybe I spend a little too much time on introspection.

I guess you've never heard of Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong. He's was recently on 60 minutes. He's worth over $13 Billion, richest man in California I believe, owner of the Lakers and a major researcher in immuno-oncology. Watch the 60 Minute segment if you get a chance! So OP I think this is a case of selection bias. There are Billionaires that come from Medicine and Biotech startups. Its just that the media doesn't showcase this as loudly as innovators from tech and internet companies. There's actually data out there that shows the top 1% are most likely to come from a career in the life sciences. Another thing you kinda need long schooling to come up with breakthroughs in the life sciences . You can't just do your research in a make shift lab in your apartment. Programmers like Zuckerburg can program from home and have the option to drop out of college.

He's actually 7th richest in California, those tech guys have him beat. Still not too shabby for a doctor!
