I'm a Psychology major who is getting ready to apply in the 2011 cycle. I've been playing around with my GPAs to see how they would look best on AADSAS (i.e. Cognitive Science can be considered a science if I want it to), and I came up with the thought-- are Psychology classes counted in your Science GPA? Or are they considered 'Non-Science' classes?

I have heard before that Psychology is considered a 'Social/Behavioral Science', but I just want to make absolute sure that Psychology classes are considered Science classes. Thanks everyone! 🙂

They are non-science.

For the most part, No. The only two Psych classes that counted towards my Science GPA were Neuroscience related, one was Psychopharmacology and the other was Brain & Mind.

Regular, non-neuroscience Psych classes are easy (at least they were for me), it would be unfair if they artificially boosted the science GPA.

Does AADSAS tell you which Psychology classes count? Or did you just determine that on your own?

Psychology classes are considered other sciences which you will put on aadsas. And obviously don't count towards bcp gpa.

spud daddy, I love your answer. Thanks 😀

Not true as far as I know, but something may have changed in the last year since I applied?

If you mark your AADSAS incorrectly (mark non-Neuroscience Psych classes as Science classes), AADSAS will correct it and it may delay your application if your classes were incorrectly filled out. That was my understanding of the issue, I could be wrong. Best to call up the people that handle the grades for AADSAS and ask them yourselves, though I'm sure the answer to your question is someone in the AADSAS application directions.

Thats not true, and your lucky you got away with it.

:nono:

If i counted Psych classes as science i would have a MUCH higher science gpa!

Mine didn't count either. I had a neuroscience and a brain and emotion course. I don't know how you got away w/ it spud daddy lol.

Hahaha no worries guys! I am only taking psychology 111 this semester so it isn't going to raise my science GPA or anything! I have a buddy who just got into Ohio State and he is the one who told me that he counted towards his science gpa. I will give him a hard time about it though.

So does that mean neuroscience-psych counts as science gpa? how do we verify this?

You can check the ADEA booklet online. But I see that they classified psychology courses as non-science (don't take my words for it; I got this from the ADEA book)

I called AADSAS for 2010 cycle and they said they are non-science. I was very disappointed since I am a psychology major too 😀.

Non-science. I'm a psych major too and i had a 4.0 lol. I did put down cognitive neuroscience as other science tho hehe. But it was in my future coursework.. so it didn't go into my gpa 🙁.

Thats not true....

how would you even know, you haven't even applied??

This is from the AADSAS faq from 2009... Has the convention changed since then? Since you've applied, you should know; please enlighten me.

Also, in 2009, applicants will have less flexibility in classifying courses as BCP, Other Science, or Non-science. In response to requests from the dental schools, course classifications will be made by the department through which they are offered, without exception. (In 2008, if an applicant took a biology based course in, for example, the psychology department, the applicant could count it as a biology course. In 2009, that course will be counted as a Non-science course because psychology is considered a non-science.

i was surprised neuroscience didn't count, but being under psychology it is still considered non-science

Thought you meant more like if its not under a 'science' department, it wouldn't be considered science. (other science)

All i could find was this quote from AADSAS, but pretty much my point was it doesnt have to be under a direct science department.

AADSAS FAQs said:
Q: I am having trouble classifying some of my courses. How do I decide to classify my classes as BCP-Other Science-Non Science?
A: Use the examples offered inside the Coursework section of the application as a guideline. Use your best judgment in determining the best placement of your courses.

That's how people were answering your question in the first place (because obviously Psych isn't BCP...)

There would be so many more Psych majors if that was the case, to the point where dental schools would disregard Other Science GPA and only look at hard sciences, like they do for med schools (BCPM).

People should be Psych majors because they enjoy the subject, not because they want to artificially boost their GPA, science or otherwise...
