We all know about the new Grade Replacement Policy (or lack of I should say). My question is about re-taking a B- and C+ in 2 core science classes that I know I can ace a 2nd time around. I can only take 2 classes per semester at this point due to Financial Aid, so I was going to retake 1 class each the next 2 semesters while throwing in another upper division science each time around as well.

For example:

Fall 2017:
Retake 1 (B-)
Upper Division Science Class

Spring 2018:
Retake 2 (C+)
Upper Division Science Class

Yes, I am only trying to boost my GPA with the retakes as of now because I need it and I know I can ace each.

Thoughts???

Thanks everyone

So the courses are both upper division science? I wouldn't retake either if that's the case. At this point retakes are most wise if its a class with significant content on the MCAT. You would be better served to take new upper division science courses and do well in them the first time this summer.

Yes, they are both upper division pre-reqs. I will be taking the MCAT before retaking them though (I'm taking the MCAT next month). Like I said, I'm really just looking for a sGPA boost.

Never retake a B or B-. Take more upper level science classes and continue an upward trend. What GPA are you working with?

At this point, my grades are all over the board and there really is no trend. Slight downward if anything. My cGPA is at about a 3.59 and sGPA is a 3.14 due to no grade replacement. Only applying DO next cycle even though for MD schools my sGPA is higher (since they include math), but still not high enough for an acceptance to MD schools.

You have a nice cumulative GPA. Take some extra science classes that you know you can Ace before you apply next year.

Ok, you all talked me out of the B-, I was kind of on the fence about that one anyway. What about the C+ though???

It depends. What class was the C+ in?

Biochemistry. I'm confident I can do better this time. There is also a Biochem class offered at my school which is two semesters long, divided into 3 credits each. The other Biochem I received a C+ in is a 4 credit but only 1 semester. Thoughts on this???

Also thanks for taking the time to help me out!

You should definitely retake Biochemistry because it can help you a little bit when you see it again in Medical school.
Do you think I should retake the 4 credit or do the 2 semester senior level at 3 credits each??

Even under grade replacement, retaking a B- is outright stupid, and would make me question your judgement. Retake a C ONLY if you feel you have not mastered the material.

It depends on your Uni's retake policy. I retook Calc 1 back at my community college and it went from a C to an A with the automatic replacement policy. In addition, I felt like the retake really helped me with the next few calculus classes.

I don't know if it is worth it to retake a B-, however.

AMCAS and now AACOMAS will count the C you received the first time regardless of your uni's replacement policy.

I think you'd be best served taking new UD classes and doing well. It would give you the GPA boost and show that you can handle new, difficult science material. That's what I'd do at least. Either way good luck this summer.

Still, it's worth to retake if you feel you learned from the retake.

This is not true. If your school does special character for retake AACOMAS honors it. My school listed r therefore I am supposed to list it exactly like it is on the transcript. Now with AMCAS they don't honor it. You still have to put the original grade even if your school wipes it from transcript.

You had your GPA verified by AACOMAS and they honored your uni's retake policy? You need to provide proof.

Below are instructions for transcript entry from the AACOMAS website.

REQUIREMENTS
  • REPORT ALL COURSES ON YOUR TRANSCRIPT, NOT JUST PREREQUISITES. Be sure to include courses from which you withdrew, repeated courses, ungraded labs, test credits, gym courses, orientations or other non-graded courses.
  • COURSEWORK MUST MATCH YOUR OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS EXACTLY. Be certain to list your courses under the correct term, year, and class level at which they were taken. Department prefixes and course numbers must be precise replicas of those on your transcripts.
  • REPORT TRANSFER COURSES UNDER THE SCHOOL AT WHICH THEY WERE ORIGINALLY TAKEN. Coursework must be reported under the actual school, and in some cases, the specific campus, it was taken at. Do NOT list coursework under the schools which the credit was transferred to; report all classes under the schools at which they were originally taken, and list them as they appear on the transcript from the original school. Do NOT list these courses again as transfer credits.

I don't need to show you proof. Yes I have been verified.COURSEWORK MUST MATCH YOUR OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS EXACTLY. Exactly. My transcripts says Psych R spring 2006 and Psych B+ Fall 2006. I entered exactly as it appears on my transcript especially since I took it at the same school.
