I hear a lot that if you take a SMP (program where you have a guaranteed acceptance to a med school after completing a masters program with a certain gpa) then it is very risky because if you don’t get a good overall gpa then you’re chances at getting into any medical school are practically 0. I wanted to know if this is a bad idea for everyone, or for certain people. I personally have a 3.8 science gpa after my 2nd year of pre med and I’d like to think I could pass and get my masters in biomedical science, but not sure if it would be risky still for me to assume I could get a 3.5 or so in the program, since I don’t know the level of diffculty of the program.

In conclusion, should I be hesitant about SMPs or not?

Thanks!

It depends on the school. Its good idea to go to that med school smp program where you want to go to. Most likely you will get into that med school. The gpa varies from school to school but if you think after smp you want to apply to all the schools then you must have very high smp gpa. SMP curriculum are pretty much same as 1st year med school that's why if one doesn't do well then the adcom knows one can't handle the med school.
All the best!

If I’m understanding your post correctly, you finished your 2nd year of undergrad with a 3.8. Keep up that trend and you won’t need an SMP to get into med school

You generally also need an MCAT score to be accepted. Just do well in your courses and ECs. You have no reason to consider a SMP right now

Doing an SMP when you have a 3.8 is nothing but foolish and demonstrates poor judgement. Do well on the MCAT.
