Are the allopathic forums more mature/less troll-ridden than the pre-allopathic forums?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
It depends on how his account was handled.

Some were just changed to a random "member xxxxrandom number" and still exists in archival form. Others were actually deleted, with all the attendant posts. The latter caused the servers to hang up and staff was discouraged from doing a full stop delete for that reason.

He stopped posting here after his wife came on and ranted about how SDN was ruining their marriage because he spent all his hours at home here. It was actually very sad.

I believe his was handled in the former way. I actually remember being linked to some threads that included his posts way back when. I think his username was changed to a 4-digit number starting with an 8, but I really don't remember.

Why though?

Yeah, apparently SDN contributed to his divorce 🙄: http://www.studentdoctor.net/pandabearmd/ (don't see how that's SDN's fault)

No, that was just how VBulletin worked when you deleted an account; it replaced the user name with some random number unless you specifically chose to delete the account and all threads. LIke NN said, PBs account was probably handled in the former manner.

Ah, ok. Got it.

Random stuff like that sticks in my mind, I dunno why.

But ask me if I saw a movie the day after I see it... 5% error rate.

I know, I was impressed!! I'm surprised he knew that.

This is why I can't help but laugh a little inside whenever I hear M1/M2s talking about how they "can't wait for 3rd year" or even better when I hear premeds talking about how they "can't wait for med school and being able to help people every day."

PB is awesome. His article on M3 year is probably the best I've ever read and nearly spot on with my experience:

http://www.studentdoctor.net/pandabearmd/2006/11/14/tomorrow-will-suck/

To be fair, general surgery and vascular surgery are probably the worst offenders, however, each rotation has its fair share of ridiculous BS.
I feel like being a scribe scrapes the surface of what it's like to be useless in a hospital. Most of the nurses are bitches and most of the docs aren't to friendly . I mean our job is literally to write **** we here , simplified but true . Maybe it's just the hospital I work at, but during the semester of my sophomore year and first few months of scribing I felt like **** walking into a hospital , knowing I had no real qualifications . It's great experience and I'v had some really nice docs , but I feel like every premed should have a similar experience since it gives you a slight foreshadow of your future years .

It really must suck knowing some of the people who aren't as qualified as you talk down to you when your a medical student .

My $00.02

When you're a med student, you don't have any qualifications in a clinical setting. I'm assuming you mean a nurse, and it's pretty clear they do know more than the avg medical student.

What do you mean by "aren't as qualified as you"? You know very little as a 3rd year med student. Don't think that just because you got into med school and crammed info into your head for the first 2 years means you are more qualified to take care of patients than a nurse or NP or anyone else on the medical team. 3rd year med students are literally at the bottom of the totem pole, 4th years only slightly above.

Glad someone else thought his statement was a little off, and it wasn't just me.

Hahaha hadn't seen that one yet.

The OB/GYN ones are priceless.

I think its the same but just linked to SDN and formatted differently.
Yes, his sense of humor is HILARIOUS. 😆

I'd love to meet him as well.

The whole thing was extremely sad 🙁

I remember his wife posting on here a few years ago (edit: wow its been over 5yrs now).

Here's the thread: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/threads/what-is-the-divorce-rate-for-doctors.4004/

Yep, I think it was like 8744 or 8477. I used to browse some of his posts when I first started reading SDN.

Yeah, clinically, nurses are head and shoulders above 3rd year and, typically, 4th year med students in terms of knowledge and experience/ability.

I meant people like rad techs, ancillary staff excluding nurses or NPs/PA. Maybe I should have stated that : I routinely see lots of emergency specialist or even the RT talk about the interns with the docs. Again maybe it's just the hospital I work at , however I just find it almost a thing that people just like talking down on people who might not be as experienced as them , but given that 1 year span will be exponentially more qualified after it .

It's called drama and gossip. Medicine, like any other profession, is full of it. Medical professionals especially like to pick on interns. I started my outpatient rotation during the infamous first week of July, and the running joke that week was that we were not allowed to admit any patients. 😛

"So here I am writing to his imaginary friends on the forum; expressing my side of the story. If I had the choice to do it over again, I would never have encouraged him to attend medical school. It has changed him greatly. He was happier in our marriage when he didn't like his job so much. The career change was my sacrifice to give him professional satisfaction. I believed in traditional marriage. I believed he would always be stong and meet my emotional needs; he pursued me for years and wrote me many letters in order to win me over. Now that he has the ultimate professional satisfaction of being a high paying EM doctor, I am not as valuable. He has all the adoration he can ever need from the staff at the hospital, his happy patients, and his forum and blog groupies. If he chooses not to resolve a conflict there is little to no recourse I have. Such a pitty."

Man, she must not have been reading many of his posts if she thought the bolded were true.

That's what I thought also. It's like she didn't even read his blog. Maybe it's evil of me, but she sounds like a nutcase. No wonder he divorced her.

I disagree, the fourth book is the most literary of the series so far. It has some of the most beautiful prose and what it lacks in plot development, it makes up for with a strong sense of theme that beautifully conveyed the decay of the war. I think you will enjoy it a lot if you re-read it.

Nah, hated all the new characters, the Onion Knight, the Ironstone folks, blah. Give me a good Kings landing intrigue or a following of the Winterfell folks. The only saving grace was the following of Tryion (no spoilers for those of you watching the series). I even missed the dragons for quite awhile, and while I'm not a Lord of the Rings or other fantasy world fan, I actually got into the Dany's quest across the narrow sea.

I think that's a very simplistic view. It's not surprising though that people would side with him given the extent to which he is idolized on this site (heck I just linked his classic Mbuto post a few minutes ago).

It's very easy to blame her since she's the "outsider". She was clearly hurting and lashing out when she posted here.

I actually think it's sad the degree to which he is hero-worshipped on this site (which is a cyclical thing as younger posters rediscover his blog posts for the first time). There is no doubt he is a gifted writer with some great insights into the problems with healthcare and medical education and a biting sense of humor. But at the same time, he let his life fall to ruin while he cultivated the admiration of a bunch of pre-meds online. Whether you think she is a "nutcase" or not - in the eyes of his wife he had abandoned his marriage and his children for a bunch of online groupies.

I view the whole thing as a cautionary tale about the dangers of internet addiction.
I'm talking about this: "So here I am writing to his imaginary friends on the forum; expressing my side of the story. If after reading his blog you think the bolded is the case, I really don't know what to say.

I think he deliberately put on a persona for his blog, and that it was an outlet for him to vent his frustrations. I don't know that it fully encapsulates his views on medicine. I also don't think it's accurate to say he regretted going into medicine or that he found no satisfaction in it. I don't want to put words in his mouth, but my recollection of him is that despite all the struggles he seemed to think the good outweighed the bad.

And I don't really think it's surprising that his wife lacked insight into what was going on with him. That's rather common among failing marriages...
