I just want to know, how hard is it to get into a top med school if you are black? For example, to apply to Johns Hopkins you have to send in a picture on your application. To me that just seems like a "weeding" the bad seeds out process to keep new black students from coming into the school. What are your thoughts on this?

Wow, you must really be new here. First of all, almost all schools require you to submit a picture with your application. Second of all, top medschools are bending over backwards to get qualified black applicants (as well as other underrepresented minorities) to attend their schools. Dont worry, stick around here long enough, you'll learn more than you ever wanted to know about affirmative action and minorities in medical school. Try doing a search...

Yes, medical schools are notorious for their "weeding out" of black students. Blacks are often held to much higher academic standards because these schools are so racist (after all, the vast majority of academia is white).

In the recent Grutter vs. University of Michigan Supreme Court case, blacks had to sue for equal treatment under the laws. Their argument was based on the 14th amendment and the 1964 civil rights act which states:
??2000d - No person in the United States shall, on the ground of race, color, or national origin, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.?

Fortunately, the Supreme Court ruled that the schools can not discriminate on the basis of race; therefore blacks should be treated the same as everyone else regardless of their race. This ruling helped us keep the anti-discriminatory practice known as Affirmative Action.

*Listens for the rumbling of SDN white supremacists to the thread*

Blacks are held to stricter standards? thats the funniest thing i've ever heard. I'm and East Indian Male... WE are held to strict standards. Look at the GPA/ MCAT averages for Howard and other predomnatley black schools and see how they are lower than an average state school. I know plenty of my black friends who have gotten into some really great schools (indiana, Northwestern, and UIC) with scores being in the middle twenties. They wouldn't **** on my application if i had gotten a 25 on the MCAT... just thought i'd set the record streight

he was being sarcastic to make a point...to the OP, stop smoking, your logic will slowly come back to you

You horrible racist. Do you know how it feels to be black? All blacks go to poor, inner-city, bullet-ridden schools. You try to make it to medical school when you're having to take classes inside a bathroom because your school is so poor. There is systemic racism everywhere. Everyone is racist, especially college admissions officers. So, try to look past the numbers you merit *****. What if black matriculants score a little lower... not that they are scoring lower. Lies!

i'm sure only black people live in poor areas.....only they go to poor schools.. only they have to suffer....

Man, what is your problem? What makes you think that this little procedure is a "weeding" out process? It is common knowledge that most, if not all, medical schools require this. Are you trying to get something going with this thread? I hope you are not serious about this question. If you are serious, then you should not be going to any professional school. You should be joining the Nation of Islam and complaining about "whitey". If you are joking, then GROW UP!!!!!!!!!!!

Gonakill: do a search of Ryo's past postings.

Or could it be because they want to make sure that they are interviewing the right person? Gasp, imagine that. The whole world ISNT out to get you.

Apparently you have not heard of affirmative action either. Take a look at mdapplicants.com and look at some of the egregiously low stats that are accepted to top schools, and then look at their race. Tell me if you see a pattern.

Ok........ well in my opinion, being a young black male myself I don't think all black people are impoverished and going to bad schools. Although that is the case at times it's not true all the time. When your ancestry has gone through so much decentering and was once the culture that was always getting the shaft, it's kind of hard to not look at things in the way the original poster does. In fact most elderly blacks influence such beliefs. Quite frankly though I believe that like myself, most young blacks just want to be given an opportunity to do their own thing and make their own stamp on society. I don't care how hard "whitey" tries to put me down, or whatever other obstacles I may have to face I'm going to become successful inspite of those things.

😱 eye opening concept eh.....

no. there are absolutely no black medical students. you are absolutely right - the picture is the weed-out factor. that's the only reason it's there. they have other ways of telling if you're the correct person showing up for the interview. nano-tagging devices, for example. upon looking at the picture, if they see you are not pink with green spots, you will be promptly rejected. brace yourself, or go get permanent makeup to perfect the green spot look.

You are not setting the record straight, you are just drawing conclusions based on few Black friends you know.

I dont really understand you. You go to JHU for undergrad (as you so modestly state next to your name), one of the top 20 undergrad schools, yet you feel as if med schools won't accept you? That makes absolutely no sense at all. The difference between the adcoms at the undergrad and the medical level are based on function and the nature of their profession, in all other aspects they have similar interests. So what makes you think racist adcoms suddenly appear at the next level?

I think urotsukidoji1 is simply looking for a preemptive crutch to explain any rejections he might receive in the medical process. Actually, its quite similar to hightrumps rant here: http://www.studentdoctor.net/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=76590&perpage=20&pagenumber=2

I always find it interesting how people on opposite ends of an issue spectrum so often resort to similar methods.

Those are just averages! I am not even going to make a comment because people like you don't see anything else in an applicant other than the applicant's score.

Won't it be nice when everyone is finally on an equal playing field and there is no more AA. Schools as well as jobs will base acceptance and employment based solely on merit and character. Maybe that is a little bit too optimistic, but even if that day did come I think people would just find something else to complain and argue about.

"Actually, its quite similar to hightrumps rant here"

Similar?.....a black guy complaining about non-existant barriers
A white guy complaining about existing barriers?

So give on man preference means giving another person the shaft.....not saying it was me....but someone.....

Unfortunately, it is too optimistic. There's always something: wealth, religion, status, gender, weight, looks, family tree, athletics, . . .

I probably started with your cave being nicer than mine.

BTW leej2004, I think your signature is racist and perpetuates segregation in our society. I mean no offense, just brutally honest. That is, unless you have male siblings.

"If I don't take care of my brothers who will?"

he could mean 'brothers' as in human brethren in general?

"All blacks go to poor, inner-city, bullet-ridden schools"

I totally agree with the point you are trying to make, but let's not generalize. ALL blacks do not go to poor, inner-city, bullet-ridden schools.

The guy posted this thread asking for if there are any black med students. Don't post unless you're answering HIS question. Of course I'm not doing that either, but that's different.

I seriously doubt it.

BTW, Mr. Urotsukidoji1 has not posted since starting this thread.

He did this last time too, he started off by saying something purposely derisive about black people formed as a question, and then never posted again in the thread, while we fought about it for about 70 or so posts. Let's not get sucked into it again...

Just let it go, guys.

gettin back to the topic...im a black premed student at wellesley ..

In one month...

MS I, UC Davis School of Medicine 😀

Black male starting med school in about two and a half weeks

I'm black, and I'm an MSI at UCLA, just one week old. It's been okay so far, lots of independent learning etc. Our class is suprisingly diverse, and believe it or not it's not just because of the Drew program. My experiences have been positive so far. I'll let you know how it is in a couple of weeks. PM me if you have questions.

Oh yeah, one more thing. I find it amazing how if a non-minority student gets in with a low stat (MCAT or GPA), they are applauded for their "good work" and "perseverance", but when black students do the same thing they are getting in just because they are black. You also have to understand that even when we do well, we are CONSTANTLY QUESTIONED.I have had this happen to me in several upper division MCB classes where I have had one of the highest grades in the class. Either way you cut it, most of us end up experiencing racism along the way. I see the rediculous comments on this board as no different.

BLACK PEOPLE HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

PORTER RICO HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

is that the same David Geffen that owns geffen records in LA?

ITS ABOUT TIME BLACKS STOPPED TALKING ABOUT RACISM. AS A LIVING BEING, IF UR FACED WITH A CHALLENGE, U FIGHT IT TILL U MAKE IT TO THE TOP. DONT BLAME THE WHITEMAN, BLAME URSELF FOR NOT WORKING HARD ENOUGH . FOR IF A VERY BLACK PERSON PRESENTS A 4.0 TO HARVARD AND CONDUCTS HIMSELF WELL AT THE INTERVIEW, HE WILL SURELY ENTER MED SCHOOL.

If only not talking about it could make it go away...🙄

We as human beings have the power to choose. Unfortunately, we could not choose our parents, nor the color of our skin. What we can choose is how we wish to present ourselves, conduct ourselves, and live with the choices that we make each and every day. We can make the choice to treat people with dignity and respect, because we would expect no less for ourselves. It's quite simple, actually. But I guess it's too simple, so we need to make it way more complicated than it really is. Everyone, black, white, brown--relax! We all have one great thing in common that brought us together to this little piece of internet real estate: we're all going to be physicians someday. Let's celebrate THAT. Let's support each other with THAT. I'm down--who's with me?

BLACK PEOPLE!!! HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

WHITE PEOPLE!!! HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

PORTER RICO!!! HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

DAMN I WANNA GO TO DAVID GEFFEN'S RECORD LABEL MED SCHOOL AND TAKE CLASSES ALONGSIDE MY BRETHREN AND GUNS N' ROSES.

WORD TO GOD

You can't have your cake and eat it too.

If you accept unequal treatment and preferential admission based on your skin color, you will have to put up with the fact that your peers will always wonder if you got on your own merits.

Do you think we should lower the board pass scores for URMs?
