Are there any specialities a DO cannot enter?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
DOs can only go into family practice. Keep this mind when you apply.

Really? I thought there were some areas Dos could apply, i just wanst sure of all f them

It's called sarcasm. DOs can apply to any ACGME, AOA, SF Match or Military match specialty or sub-specialty. The odds of actually getting said residency vary.

D.O.s can't go into training as power rangers, except that all doors are open 🙂

Dang, I look good in spandex too! Thanks for the response.

HAHAHHAHAHAHA

All specialties are open. Just make sure you're a good student.

Actually, DOs have an additional residency that MDs CAN"T go into...OMM/NMM!

WHOOO!

pics or it didn't happen

actually, on second thought... i take that back! spandex.. <shudder>

I too will work out and put on tights because a real man wears tights...

I plan on specializing in underwater basket weaving. . .I hear it is very therapeutic for patients and one of the few specialties that a DO can get into. . . .

TG ... use the search function or read the FAQ

DOs are fully licensed physicians (the same as MDs) and can enter any field a MD can.

Thats what I thought, just wanted to verify that all specialties were open.
What I have found online, that I find disappointing, is that alot of Europe doesnt recognize the DO as a physician, so you couldnt move to France or UK and practice there if you wanted. Thats sad.

Fact of the matter is, if you're moving to any other country you're going to run into large speed bumps whether you're a US trained MD or DO.

Dude you're killing us here ...

Search for DO practice rights, they are extensive. Also, you will never move to a foreign country and practice medicine. This is something all naive pre-meds say and it NEVER happens. Furthermore, a US trained MD couldn't even walk into France and put up a shingle just because he's an MD. There are all kinds of speed bumps, something few youngins' realize.

Geez you guys are mean. If the OP genuinely doesn't know, he will innocently ask. You guys don't have to bash him for it. Almost giving DOs a bad name. We are supposed to be compassion and helpful and encourage to ask so that ppl know everything about the field.

Some patients will really not know that drinking alcohol is bad during pregnancy. I don't think it will be nice to yell at them... although as I'm writing this, I just realize this was a very weak argument, and maybe we could put some sense into the patient and yell lol hahahahaha.

LOL thank you! I can honestly say, since Ive joined SDN, I have come across some of the rudest people I have ever had the chance to encounter.
Thank you for being considerate, I am truly asking to find out all that I can before making any decisions. 🙂

I saw on Wiki a while ago that DO's have unlimited practice rights in the fun countries of Europe, parts of Asia, and parts of south america. Most of the African and Middle east countries are unknown. Apparently south africa will only limit DO's to manipulation (Like we really want to practice there anyway.)

The rudest people usually give the best, most direct, useful advice ... trust me 😉

Plus, people on SDN do get burned out on the threads over and over, but it really may not hurt to grow thick skin now. Medicine isn't a hugs and kisses type of field.

Stick around ... you'll do alright.

It is much worse at the pre-allo forum, I'm afraid. Sometimes I feel like I should never post there again. What's worse, allo med students actually contribute by being racist and discriminating against other components that make an individual.

Or timetraveling. but on a serious note, they can do just about anything a MD can. Osteopathic sounds cooler too.

Statistics show that MD's have a better chance of getting the residency they want. There are also more MD's than DO's in the country though. The fact is, it is usually easier to get into a DO school. Im looking at applying for both because they are both in the area i want to live in. DO what you want to DO. You can succeed either way.

People on SDN can be mean-spirited, but in this case, it's a matter of doing a simple google search.

They should change it to "House DO"

and instead of WebMD it should be WebDO lol

oh! and instead of MDapplicant, it should be DOapplicant

That's not politically correct either. It should be House MD OR House DO, WebMD OR WebDO. I can hear George and Jerry debating this in my head.

George: There's nothing wrong with being a DO. Jerry: Absolutely not! Someone's medical orientation should be nobody's business but his own. 🙂

If you're a DO, you can't pick up chicks at a bar. They're only attracted to MDs.
