Are there any vet technologists out there?

I am interested in becoming a Veterinary Technologist. I've already graduated college and have a MBA, but after 12 years in the "corporate world" I am ready to pursue my passion--working with animals/animal welfare. I would very much like to speak with someone currently working as a Vet Technologist to find out how they like the profession..pluses, minuses, etc. It's a little late for me to pursue Vet School at my age, so I'm looking at Vet Technology instead. My career goals at this point would be to work at a zoo or at a nonprofit animal shelter.

i hope someone answers your questions...but i just wanted to say that YOU'RE NOT TOO OLD!! 🙂

Ditto! You're not too old to go for what you want. A lot of us here are very much the non-traditional student types (myself included).

You could PM LVT2DVM, she's friendly and has been a vet tech for some time now. 🙂

Edit: And she's applying to vet school, so she could tell you why she decided to do so...

I am technically not a vet technologist, but am currently enrolled in school to become a licensed/certified technician. (After which I plan on continuing with pre-reqs to apply to vet school.)

So I can't speak from a whole lot of experience job-wise, but I can tell you that I LOVE tech school, and would highly recommend it if you want to work with animals, and also have an interest in the medical/scientific aspect of the job.

Although I do have to agree with the other posters and say that you are never too old to pursue your dream!

***I can say one thing though---try and get some experience (if you haven't already) to be sure that you want to be in the field, because you DEFINATELY can not be in it for the money! Especially as a tech---I have already found from many sources that it is a career that will keep you living paycheck to paycheck for the rest of your life. Of course to me, it's worth it! You just have to weigh your values.

With your MBA, I would think you'd be perfect to be an office manager/vet tech if you have good business sense. One of the clinics I shadowed at had a combined office manager/vet tech (I think she was certified, but not 100% sure) and she really enjoyed the best of both worlds. When I have my own practice x number of years in the future, that's precisely the sort I would hire as an office manager. 😀 But even if you're in your 30s, you can definitely still go back, get your pre-reqs, and apply for vet school. We've got a few folks in their 30s in our class (several former techs too).

Just wanted to second/third the notion that it is never too late! I have a master's and 14 years in the corporate world and I am applying to school. However, I will also say that the Techs in the emergency practice where I work are some of the most amazing people I have ever met!

Thanks, this is really helpful! I'm very excited to go to vet tech school. I think it's going to be a great fit for me. The money doesn't matter that much. I really want to work with and care for animals. I could also use my business background to help run a practice or work in a nonprofit animal welfare organization. Right now, I just want to focus on getting into vet tech school. 🙂

glad i could help. =)

and if you are looking for a really good program and happen to be in kentucky, you should check out morehead state. the professors are amazing, and the school has it's own farm, so you get a lot of experience with small and large animals.

good luck wherever you go though!

and i think the idea of combining your MBA/experience with your tech training to help run an office would be an amazing opportunity for you.

Welcome Willowt...Sorry it took me so long...New job, VMCAS, suppl. apps, GRE, kids, more work...ect...ect...
Ive been a licensed vet tech for 14 years and Id be happy to share whatever information I have to give. Albeit keep in mind this is a pre-vet forum, so hopefully we wont be asked to leave the party. If you' rather PM me feel free or post some specific questions else I could ramble on for hours. There are some great technician forums out there, and somewhere in here there is thread with a list.
