Are you ethically obligated to work for free if asked to do so during these times?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I believe that's a form of kickback. You are providing a service for below FMV in exchange for exclusive rights to bill.

So either you or the hospital are at risk
They will bill for the services they provide like intubation and ICU care. It’s just not worth it. They want to keep the contract so when the profitable elective surgeries return they are still there....

Assuming that PPE production ramps up and meets demand, I disagree.

Human beings can be convinced to charge machine gun nests, Throw themselves on grenades, Blow themselves and their fellow man to bits.
We can be convinced to put ourselves at risk caring for members of our communities right in front of us, even if the salaries drop or disappear.
Yeah, but those people tend to sign up for the military. Or are brainwashed from a young age. Or are drafted. They aren't often going to chose to risk their lives for nothing or for peanuts. They better wise up.
I for one have been in the military and this ain't no military or a Middle East terrorist group. Nobody cares about you more than you. Especially in the work place.

So let's hope the PPE production ramps up.

PP Onc here... hospital that has antagonized, refused privileges for new partners, and purposefully trashed us and deferred patients away has sent requests for "volunteer" doctors to assist if demand is expected from COVID.... needless to say our response 🤔
I want to see who these "volunteer" doctors are.

I am so sorry that they put you in such a precarious position. GME has refuted any notion of any trainee/fellow being involved in patient care of any COVID+ patient. Most likely scared of lawsuits. However, placing trainees as sacrificial lamb with no adequate PPE or expected to work >80 hrs a week while attendings can alternate weeks is something that I am noticing around the country and miffed about.
Band together and when all this is said a done, get a class action lawsuit against the GME and Hospitals. Or quite frankly, if the residents banded together NOW and all walked out, what will happen to these hospitals? I bet they will want to negotiate for better treatment then. And that's why it's nice to have a union.

Honestly I love this **** so I'd work for free right now(and have done - 2 shifts for basically free this week) . But not with the ****wit OCD mother****es I work with 99% of the time.

Only to snorkel dying ppl and do real work.

Plus I'm 30 and usually sprint a 5k post call then go drinking all day so my odds are good. This sh1t will only happen once in our lifetime! We'll either die or have some stories to tell

The one semi decent thing about this whole mess is the amount of needless **** work we don't have to do anymore that was considered essential 3 weeks ago.

My group is staffing for free because hospital said no pay and our leadership said if we don't show goodwill, then when an AMC comes knocking with bags of money then hospital can show us the door. This is despite being on committees and all. I guess PP you do what you can to preserve your contract
Fools. If any AMC offers to staff that prison for $0.01 less, they'll toss you out no matter how many patients with Covid-19 coughed in your face.

Me too. I was offered to "volunteer" for $17,500/week. 7 on/7 off. 12 hour days. The money is obviously there. If anyone dares mention some BS about the Hippocratic Oath to guilt you into providing free services and risk your life, you tell them to take that garbage to St. Elsewhere.

Yeah man I'm ****ed. I absolutely love the job when it's like this.

I mean this is obviously out of control but like some of the nights you'd have back home during influenza months. 1 resident for 24 bed icu, staff at home rogering the missus, Emerg not worth a wank.

It was glorious. Handover in the am was 'how many died? Here's 50quid for the pub!'

That’s slightly more than the RNs are making. Hahaha

Is this how y’all really talk over the pond? Cuz this **** is hilarious!

I would still be careful. Young residents have been dying from covid.
