In the clinic, I'm wearing respirator and face shield, but out in public, I'm un-masked.

If I'm in scrubs - Mask.
If I'm in regular clothes - No mask.
If I'm in my own shower inside my house where 4 ppl reside and not one of which has had Sx of any sort, at any time - No mask.
I wonder if I should be wearing a mask during sex with my wife...My wife would probably benefit from that...

Don't. She HATES that.
The upshot? Putting politics aside, we do not have good data that wearing a mask will protect you or others or society at large. Having said that, I also realize this is a personal decision, so I would encourage everyone to get educated on the science and draw their own conclusions. In addition, I also know that wearing masks makes some people feel protected and that that could have some value. All I want is for smart people to read the actual data and then write or speak accordingly.
I wonder what the offset in benefit is due to poor hand hygiene and near constant touching of the mask by lay people and anyone who doesnt routinely do a sterile scrub in.
drusso, I respect your opinion and right to voice your opinion, and I love the ability to respond to your statements.
posting Centeno's position papers once in a great while is understandable. but please, don't post his opinion pieces as a routine occurrence.
unless your name really is Chris Centeno.
one of the offset advantages of masks is that the wearer does not put his fingers in his mouth as much as if he were not wearing a mask at all.
id rather hear your thoughts.
I couldn't say it better myself...
"It is also clear that masks serve symbolic roles. Masks are not only tools, they are also talismans that may help increase health care workers’ perceived sense of safety, well-being, and trust in their hospitals. Although such reactions may not be strictly logical, we are all subject to fear and anxiety, especially during times of crisis. One might argue that fear and anxiety are better countered with data and education than with a marginally beneficial mask, particularly in light of the worldwide mask shortage, but it is difficult to get clinicians to hear this message in the heat of the current crisis. Expanded masking protocols’ greatest contribution may be to reduce the transmission of anxiety, over and above whatever role they may play in reducing transmission of Covid-19."
Transmission of viruses was lower with physical distancing of 1 m or more, compared with a distance of less than 1 m (n=10 736, pooled adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 0·18, 95% CI 0·09 to 0·38; risk difference [RD] −10·2%, 95% CI −11·5 to −7·5; moderate certainty); protection was increased as distance was lengthened (change in relative risk [RR] 2·02 per m; pinteraction=0·041; moderate certainty). Face mask use could result in a large reduction in risk of infection (n=2647; aOR 0·15, 95% CI 0·07 to 0·34, RD −14·3%, −15·9 to −10·7; low certainty), with stronger associations with N95 or similar respirators compared with disposable surgical masks or similar (eg, reusable 12–16-layer cotton masks; pinteraction=0·090; posterior probability >95%, low certainty). Eye protection also was associated with less infection (n=3713; aOR 0·22, 95% CI 0·12 to 0·39, RD −10·6%, 95% CI −12·5 to −7·7; low certainty).
Interpretation
The findings of this systematic review and meta-analysis support physical distancing of 1 m or more and provide quantitative estimates for models and contact tracing to inform policy. Optimum use of face masks, respirators, and eye protection in public and health-care settings should be informed by these findings and contextual factors. Robust randomised trials are needed to better inform the evidence for these interventions, but this systematic appraisal of currently best available evidence might inform interim guidance.[/QUOTE]
Guys, I've been watching the news and it's so encouraging! Apparently no one is enforcing masks or social distancing. I've seen very large crowds gathering together in every city and state across the country! The pandemic is over! I'm just amazed at how quickly it all resolved. Looks like this thread/discussion is a moot point.

Or bleachI would just advise to gargle a little mouthwash prior to event.
