A Dental school dean of admissions told me that this year is going to be very competitive, since there will be around 11000 applicants and only 4300 spots. Well I am sick of hearing this BS only because I hear so many people are pre-dental only because of stupid reasons such as: my father is one, I wasnt accpeted into Med school so I figured Dental school is easier and just as much money, pharmacy school rejected me.....Stop the BS and go become something you would love to be. I know so many of us here got accepted because we are doing this out of love and motivation of one day becoming an Artist or/and philanthropist who just want to be a dentist because it speaks to him or her. Take my money but dont become a dentist please. I dont want to know you if you are such a person who got into dental school. Thank you
I got this off my chest finally :meanie:

I would relax, I don't think your going to have a problem corn ell.. Why do people come on here and tell people the crap they tell. I mean come on now, I am not going to tell you that I dropped some kids off at the pool, so why should I care that you didn't get a A on exam or that you hate people that are applying to dental school for the wrong reasons.

um...look at your stats, you'll get in somewhere.

chances are if you were rejected from pharmacy school, you probably didn't get into dental school either......just though I'd add that.

Suck it up. What may be a stupid reason to you may not seem so stupid to all those who are applying. Besides, competition is necessary to recruit the best doc's possible.

Dentistry is finally getting the attention and prestigue it deserves. There was a time that med school rejectees or those who wanted an easier rout applied to dental school and b/c the demand was low enough, many of them were admitted (hence all the unhappy dentists around). Now that dentistry is being recognized, it is attracting many more qualified candidates from all different walks of life and with great qualifications. Many applicants have backgrounds in BME, compSci, engineering, finance, etc and although they may not be planning to directly apply what they learned in their previous lives, they will for sure benefit the profession of dentistry as a whole b/c of the knowledge and expertese that they will contiously or contiously bring into the profession. Competition is good.

That isn't necessarily a good thing. In the long run it could mean more lawsuits from patients, more dealing with insurance companies, etc.
Oh, come on Gavin. 😀 Sounds like they got you working too hard over there at Arizona. 😛 Just think, getting a more quality applicant pool will mean less idiotic threads/posts in the dental forums. (Note, I said 'less.' )

The increasing competetiveness is definitely a good thing for dentistry. However, I'm still not convinced though that it will outlast the war in iraq and our faltering economy. Regardless, I think the American Dental Association should take this opportunity to make some important changes. One change I think they should make is adding physics to the DAT. It seems pretty idiotic to me that the MCAT has physics and the DAT doesn't; considering the average dentist uses applied physics a whole lot more than your average doctor.

thank you....i totally agree; i'd rather have us under the radar....pour the attention and prestige all over the meds.

on the other hand, the fact that d-schools are getting more interesting applicants with interesting and variable undergrad and grad degrees means that the dental porfession is cultivating more knowledge that could be capitalized on whenever the profession needs to evolve in the future.

first of all, congrats on the stats. you killed the DAT in a big way. your GPA is awesome too.

i do believe that every man and woman is not born to do one job only. everyone is qualified for more than one occupation. i wont be surprised if someone is as good at being a doctor as he/she is good at being a lawyer, a dentist, a computer programmer, or a dancer. these med or pharm rejects are not necessarily going to be poor d-students or bad dentists.

as far as getting into dentistry out of "love", allow me to remind you that opting for one of the health, law, or business professions is quite rarely out of a calling or "love"....usually, it is a rational decision backed by a small degree of passion. one may have had a calling to become an astronaut, a teacher, a firefighter, an actor, or an athlete...but not a dentist, a chiropractor or an immigration lawyer. rationality can, and usually, brings that "love" you're talking about. choose the profession pragmatically and the love of it would come later. i personnaly am cautious of passion and "love" that come before getting your hands dirty in the practice of the professsion because passion tends to blind rational faculties. "love" that stems from practice is more trustworthy and longlasting. it's not like the med rejects had "love" for medicine and then opted for dentistry, which they dont "love"....most meds are not mother teressas by any way, shape, or form. they, too, opt for medicine mostly out or rationality. and if they are getting rejected for one reason or another and then choose dentistry, then it's understandable. after all, we always seek out the next best thing when the best thing is unattainable.....

Why does it seem that dentistry comes second best as the "next best thing" when in actuality it is the BEST THING (at least for the few and the proud, kinda like myself). 😡

That sounds like a great idea (luckily im done with that phase). Perhaps this means less MD people willl switch to dental.

it's the next best thing for med-rejects who apply to d-school. it is indeed the best thing for people like you and me. 😉

I hate those med and pharm rejects... And those A-holes who have dad's as dentists. i am on your side mr. Cornell.

I am becoming a dentist for the right reasons...

1) Work environment that will include me (a guy) and 4-8 women... best ratio I have ever seen 😍

2) Access to Nitrous Oxide 🙄

3) Will never need to christmas shop ever again... (will just give out free tooth paste and tooth brush samples 😀 )

4) Will get paid more than my pre-med friends

5) Can get over my inferiority comlex by inflicting pain on each and every one of my patients for a feeling of control.

6) Lastly, I really want to give back to the profession. I am going to become a dentist and not kill myself.... thus helping out that silly little stat that says we are going to get our D.D.S. then jump off a bridge.

   Just kidding of course... well on most of the points.

I couldnt have said it better. I mean seriously what kid wakes up in the morning and says "mommy, I wanna be a dentist and do root canal and extractions" Most male children wanna be cops. When I was young, I told myself that when I grow up I wanna work at toysRUs.
All of us want to be dentists and part of what makes us burn up inside is when we see someone who put dentistry as thier second choice get our spot that we wanted. Thats terrible....for US...not them or the patient who will now have someone working on his teeth who is more competent. If some premedschool reject (i'm not fond of them either) is more qualified then a predental school devout, that should mean a lot for the premed student whether we like it or not. We are not in kindergarden anymore where we call "me first", "me second" and its who ever wants something more that gets it. Grow up yall. fighting spirit...long time no dardasha

everybody has his or her own reasons to go to dental school. i'm personally sick of nerds like you who make a such an issue about having the "right intentions" of going to dental school such as that "its a calling" bull crap... u need to relax, and stop being a judgemental, self-righteous idiot
