So I have been doing some research about the HPSP scholarships and residency programs for Army and Air Force. I have two big questions:
1) Does the Air Force allow more deferred residencies than the Army? For example, if I wanted to do general surgery residency, if I applied for the Air Force HPSP, would it be more likely that I get a deferred residency than the Army HPSP?
2) If I have to do a military residency, are Army residencies better than Air Force residencies?

Thanks

Do a google search for "air force gme" and look for the forecast board results to see how many deferred spots there are for the AF. I don't know where the Army keeps this information, but the short answer is that AF generally grants more deferrals than the other branches.

For your second question, they're both pretty bad.

I don't think the Army publishes that data, probably because they offer very few deferments in general and probably none in general surgery.

I'm not sure if comment above about having bad residencies was meant to be specific to general surgery or not, but I feel very good about the quality of my Army residency. I, however, am not a surgeon.

depends on the year, depends on the applicants and number of spots
