Army drug tests?

Hey guys. I am a supposed to start working at EAMC on June 1st. Back during the Superbowl, I was really drunk, and I smoked a lot of weed with my brother.

That's the first time I smoked since high school. I have not since, and will not ever again.

Will I be OK for any urine drug test? Have any of you had your hair tested in the Army. Have any of you ever heard of the Army testing hair? I heard this can be traced back months to years!!!!

You have some issues with impulse control, abuse of alcohol and other intoxicants. Your problem isn't just that you smoked pot. Have you got any insight into that? How often and how much do you drink?

I drink like one a month or two; I hardly ever even get buzzed. It was one night when I hadn't seen my brother in 1 year.

that's a bit harsh, I think you're going overboard by implying that somebody who smoked marijuana once over an 8 year period may have a clinical problem. And if drinking beer during the superbowl was considered to be alcohol abuse, then half the country would be in that category. This sounds like the kind of mistake that a lot of normal people could make.

To the OP: I doubt they'll check your hair; I'm pretty sure that isn't part of standard inprocessing for personel at any of the army med cen's. Most army med cen's only do random urine drug screenings. Since you only used marijuana once during the superbowl, you'll have no trouble passing a urine test.

I am not being harsh at all. The issue is impulse control. The person drinks heavily and is persuaded to do something they say they haven't done in 8 years, and to do a lot of it. And what they do is prohibited by the organization where they hold a commission, and they know it's prohibited. And now they post asking for our "help".

What kind of "help" do you think they need? Help in concealing their drug use? Reassurance that they won't pop positive on their reporting drug screen?

They will probably do a urine drug screen. That is standard intake procedure in the military. I have no idea whether this person will pop positive six months later. Maybe not. Would you think there wasn't therefore a problem?

FWIW, I was on ACDUTRA at NMC Balboa when another HPSP med student popped positive following admitted use one month or so before reporting. He went to Captain's mast.

Interesting- you could be in serious trouble. After spending 2 years in the operational army after Internship- I have learned a bit about how things in the Army work. What I will tell you about army Drug tests is that it is usually Random drug tests. A company commander has to do 10% of his soldiers every month randomly. When there is a change of command, the new company commander is allowed to do a 100% urine drug test once in the first month of his command. Every other time is a random 10%. It is a pain in the ass for the people that are getting tested- they usually get a call at 0430 in the morning and have to show up someplace within 15 minutes.

Although I have nothing to hide like you do, I have only had to do 1 UA and that one was during the change of command. IF you do piss positive- all is not lost. Depending on the commander, you could wind up in ASAP and given a second chance. There is also the possibility commander may want to make an example out of you and chapter you out of the Army. If you really luck out, you might not have to give any urine ever. Or by the time you do have to give urine- all traces will be out of your system. Another thing working in your favor is that most places do not make you pee during inprocessing.

There are masking agents out there as well- but look that up yourself. I am not going to help with that one. What ever winds up happeneing to you- DO NOT SMOKE THAT CRAP AGAIN. it will catch up with you and I am not sure you should be in the army if you do smoke that stuff anyway.

When throwing around terms like "impusle control" and "substance abuse," I usually think of non-isolated instances. This person made a bad decision due to pressure from a family member while drunk during the super bowl. It was the only such instance in over 8 years. Actually, since she wasn't in the army during high school, it was the only such instance ever. IMHO, that's not even close to anything which could be labeled as an "impusle control" problem.

Was she being stupid? => yes, and she deserves a slap on the wrist. However, I don't think that one bad decision is enough to qualify someone as having a serious problem. Fortunately for her, it almost certainly won't affect her career b/c there is no way in hell that a one time use of marijuana would ever cause a positive urine test months later. If her story is legit, and she really only smoked marijuana once, then she shouldn't test positive for more then a week afterward (in theory).

He was probably lying. A normal person wouldn't test positive over a month after their last use of marijuana unless they were a very regular user. After all, cannabinoids are now an FDA approved medication. We know that they have a long half life due to lipid solubility, but they don't hang around for months unless you've been smoking huge amounts on a regular basis.
