I will be attending Temple, and got commissioned today (Army HPSP). I don't think I will be able to attend the OBLC this summer, and I was wondering if there would be any time during my summers at TU to do OBLC or active duty activities? Could any previous (or current) Army HPSP receipts who have/are attending Temple please relay their experience?

I went to Temple, and had to make special arrangements with the professors to take tests early, finish up assignments early so I could go.

That being said, 2 yrs ago the Army switched and started sending new graduating dentists to the shortened OBLC - so there is typically no room left for dental students to even try. You can look at doing externships at different bases instead.

Thank you Krmower for responding. When you said that I can do externships to different bases, where you referring to trainings in the summer? And I am a little confused as to what these activities will consist of. Also, during the summer what does the pay look like? I am I still receiving the stipend, or am I getting 2Lt pay? I am sorry for all of the questions. I asked the recruiter these questions, but I am just making sure that they were correct.

Tell SFC Webb hi for me - just spent several days with her this week.

(In the Army) During the summers (or other times if you arrange it), you get paid active duty pay of a 2nd Lt for 45 days. If you want to do an externiship at a base (TDY), it must be for a minimum of 3 weeks (at least when I was in - you will still get paid for the full 45 days active duty). These externships could be done at several bases - you coordinate with Ms. Roxanne Flores.

The activities may vary by location and depending on what year you are in dental school, but may be anything from simply observing, to other minimal dental proceedures.

I am currently at Temple and the past 4 years that I have been there, not one HPSP student was allowed to go during the 4 years including me. Also with the new dean and his new policies it's less likely than now to go than it has been in the last couple of years.

What new policies are you speaking of?

Lots of new policies but the one that is most pertinent to your situation is our externship/leave policy. You are not aloud to go on any externship/activity until your sr. year.....nothing before that. They will not allow or clear you for practically any type of leave. Yea, it's ridiculous especially, if you want to specialize. We've been trying to overturn it or change it but it has been to no avail.

Yes, that does sound ridiculous. What is the reason for that policy? Also, why all the new policies, and are there a way to get a hold of the new policies before orientation in Aug.?

You can extern your 3rd year, but you only have 4 weeks total to use - includes service trips to other countries. You can theoretically extern 1st and 2nd year, but you cannot miss class and cannot participate in any clinical stuff (other than observation).

Definitely cannot get ODS/COT/OBS done while in 2nd/3rd/4th year. Last year a 1st year got it done during summer break, so it's doable if the schedules line up. 2 years ago a 4th yr did it his last semester - but probably didn't get permission to go from admin and definitely something you can't pull off now.
