Thats because you are referring to the small end first instead of the small end second as in Army-Navy;)

The longer end is the Navy end because they have submarines that dive deep
 
I always heard that the long end was the navy because they had gone off the deep end and the short end was the Army end because they make short work of things.

Would you guess this description came from an Army surgeon?!
